Hi, my D is an upcoming senior and we have started the visiting process. Will try to go this summer to COW. Do dorms have AC? Are there in addition to 2-student rooms the option for singles? Is there a questionnaire you had to fill out to match your roommate?

Hello ps13, and welcome to the C.O.W pasture here at College Confidential! :P

No dorms on campus have air conditioning with the exception of Gault Manor, which is only open to upperclassmen students. There are also a limited number of single rooms in the dorms, but again those are only open to upperclassmen students. In regards to the questionnaire, there are two forms that are to be filled out that they use to determine your housing placement and also selection of a roommate or roommates. First is the Meyers-Briggs Personality Inventory, and second is the Housing Application form. The HA form asks for such information like your basic stats, an optional box for religious affliation, if you smoke/object to a roommate who smokes, questions about room environment/activities and interests, musical interests, and characteristics of ideal/less than ideal roommate.

Thanks for the info. I just registered for the July 17th summer visit. Is merit aid hard to receive? My D has ACT 30, straight A’s 4.+, top of class student. I saw a brief description of the scholarships available on the website. Has anyone received anything comparible to my D and how much?

Merit aid is usually not that hard to receive, it’s often fairly easy. As far as the listed merit scholarships, Rachacha’s D received the College Scholar award which was a full-tution award. Based on statistics, your D seems to be fairly well qualified. In addition to the College Scholar, she also would qualify to apply for the Arthur Holly Compton, Covenant (if an active member of the Presbyterian Church), and the Leadership in Diversity scholarships. The Dean’s award is pretty much open to everyone, so seems the Byron Morris award, and if you happen to live in Trumball or Mahoning counties in OH (and I’ve noticed you said you live in NE OH ), she may be eligable for that as well.

My overall package for last year (08-09) was a full-ride after the combination of Wooster aid (99%) and two minor outside scholarships. This year, my package is beyond a full-ride for a total of $45,650. The surplus will be credited to my student account, which will hopefully be available to me to pay for books, etc. My situation is pretty rare, and that’s not including the few students that have received the College Scholar and however much the Compton scholarship may be. Those numbers seem to be slightly limited as well. However, virtually EVERYONE at Wooster receives some type of aid whatever it may be with hardly anyone being denied it appears. So if you’re worried about getting aid, then be assured you’ll get something.

That’s good to hear. My D has a 31 ACT, which I was hoping would qualify her for merit. Not top of her class but in top 10%. She wants to take ACT again in the fall but I expect her to come in around the same, Math and Science are her downfall. We don’t qualify for need based aid since her dad married a rich woman. She also is hispanic and planned on applying for a diversity scholarship. I am hoping it is affordable for us in the end.

I forgot to say she has 35s on ACT in both English and Reading. I don’t know if the individual subjects make a difference or just the composite score.

Wouldn’t hurt to ask - my D was the flip-side of that (strong math & science, not as strong english and reading). Might depend on the major she is interested in…

Susan–Your daughter should get wonderful FA from Wooster, between an outstanding ACT and a diversity scholarship. My daughter is a rising senior at Woo, and if you’d like to PM me, I could fill you in on our own experience there–and give you a million reasons why my husband and I will be giving money to Wooster’s endowment fund until the day we die. It’s an amazing, unbelievable school, what it does for the students enrolled.

Hindoo and rhsmom, How nice to read your posts! My son will be a first year student in less than a month and so far we have been nothing but impressed with Wooster. My son received a half tuition scholarship. Just about every letter he has received has a personal note on it.
Based on the stats shared, I’d imagine ps13’s and susan’s kids would get a sizable scholarship.

Suz,
Your son has a great four years to look forward to–best of luck to him! I’m achingly sad that our daughter is approaching her final year at this incredible school. Yesterday, I made hotel reservations for her graduation next May. For future reference, book your graduation reservations more in advance than I did. My two top choices, the Hilton Garden Inn and the Hampton Inn, were already full.

Thanks for the good wishes. We just found out today that he’ll have Hayden Shilling as his advisor and FYS teacher. We met Shilling at the admitted student preview day and he was very gracious to our son. He plays tennis which Shilling coaches so they’ll be seeing a lot of each other. We also now know that our son will be living in one of the program houses based on his FYS selection.

When my son won the College Scholar Award (Class of 2011) the minimum ACT score was 29. I don’t know if that has changed. The best thing about Wooster merit money is that you do not need to maintain an unrealistic GPA to keep your merit money. That is a requirement at many schools.

Good luck to all of you. Wooster is amazing if you take advantage of it’s many offerings.

I just hope Schilling sticks around long enough to advise my son through his years at Wooster. I’m excited for my son to have him. Anyone know about Westminster Cottage?

My daughter had Shilling for her FYS in Westminster program house. His FYS is always in that house. My daughter was the TA for that class the following year. She has Prof Shilling as her adviser and has had additional classes with him. She had a wonderful experience in Westminster her freshman year. Her circle of close friends are mostly from that house. She is living in a program house this year with friends from Westminster. Let me know if you have other questions. My daughter is home this week.

Well my son is settled into Westminster and it seems to be going very well. It’s a nice ready made community with kids from states all over the country. He reports his FYS has some intelligent kids and he’s enjoying life at Wooster.
