Dorms/ bathrooms/ residential programs

I really want to be in the Quad, that would be awesome but I don’t know that much about it. I know it’s supposed to be the most social, freshman-based… which ones do you guys want to be in and why? Let me know if you’re going to freshman preview day or something in April where we can check out the dorms.

(1) Hill is in the quad, right? And I heard the singles are pretty big. Why is Hill not really anyone’s first choice?

(2) What dorms have private bathrooms? How many people share one bathroom?

(3) Are any of you applying for / are in a residential program, how do you like it, what do you do?

(4) Are you guys getting a single/double/suite and why?

If you’re only going to answer one of these questions, #2 is the most important… although they all are… I’ve been dying to know for a long time.

hill is not in the quad; the three college houses in the quad are fisher hassenfeld, ware, and riepe, all between 36th and 38th on spruce.

hill college house is on 34th and walnut; its drab / not-yet-renovated architecture, smaller rooms, lack of a/c, and general location make it less attractive (though its social opportunities are greater, due to the sense of community engendered by such close quarters)

only the highrises (harrison, harnwell, rodin) and lowrises (dubois + gregory) and sansom (which is an upperclass dorm only) have private (in-room) bathrooms; all other dorms have shared bathrooms on a hallway. the number of people sharing a bathroom depends on the bathroom's location, and varies from dorm to dorm.

But can you just give me a range, even if it's like 2-50, just so I can get an idea? (# people sharing)

Wouldn't I feel kind of awkward and left out if I was in the highrise/lowrise because freshmen are a minority?

i suppose one single-sex bathroom shared by 20-30 people is probably the maximum; some bathrooms are on dead-end halls, so they see much less usage.

regardless of where you live you'll hang out where your friends are, wherever that may be; quad residents hang out in highrises and kings court / english, hill residents hang out in quad, it varies a lot.

Morris has some really nice and large singles. The morris dorms also have an incredible view. you can see the entire lower quad from the windows. Really nice to wake up too..

I think the sharing bathrooms thing is about 20-25 per bathroom.
From what i saw, the worst dorms in the quad were on the basement floor. Laundry rooms + air conditioning/ heating machines tended to be located on the basement floor, and this created lots of noise making hard to relax/ study in your room.

What are all the little groups of rooms? I don't get it. There's a name for each cluster or something.

Don't live in Hill. Every other option is much better.

The Quad has 3 houses and then each house is further subdivided. It's confusing; I never lived there and hearing something like "Speakman 3rd floor" makes you wander the labyrinth, searching for it, encountering dead ends, finding lost treasure, etc.

I share a bathroom with 10-15 guys. Think of it this way. Our 3 showers and 4 toilets get cleaned everyday - if you had your own you would have to clean it. There's usually proper etiquette with the whole thing, and its not a worry.

Each of the quad houses is divided into a number of different builldings. As far as the bathrooms, on my floor in the quad (and remember that each one is different) there are about 12 guys sharing one bathroom. It is not too bad and everyone is usually respectful (though this changes on friday and saturday nights somewhat) and tries to keep it clean.

bathrooms are not that dirty if your hallmates are decent; they're cleaned once a day, usually in the morning.

the precise number of showers and toilets depends on location; the majority in quad have at least 2 of each, while hill has 3 toilets and 2 showers in each, and smaller / more out-of-the-way bathrooms may have 1 of each only.

different residential programs do more than others (i've heard of some that don't really do anything, or meet like once a month or something), but one really can't go wrong with any.

highrises and lowrises are indeed a bit harder to live in as a freshman, but there's still ample opportunity to bond with the community in each (especially within gregory, i've noticed) and in general one should have no trouble making friends who live all over.

Do bathrooms look like public bathrooms like the kind in malls, or more "homey"?

uh, definitely malls...

Quad is the place to live. As far as the scenery and rooms go, it is much nicer than any other dorm. I was a little nervous about the noise factor but it wasn't bad at all. However, that probably depends on the hall. There are a fair amount of singles as well and if you are lucky you can get a sink.

i visited a friend in hill and i have to say i felt like being back home in miami... straight up ghetto bathrooms. lol
i could almost SEE the "I LOVE RK" and "JENNY IS A ___" graffiti all over the walls. yeeish.
i think the word is: dingy.

altho hill is closer to the bio/chem classes, right? good location for premeds/science majors? omg no a/c???

wat are residential programs?

What about King's Court?

apparently people think king's court is antisocial
