Hello, I applied to berkeley for fall 2011 and am fairly confident that I will be accepted(4.0, Philosophy major from a CC). So I was wondering whether or not junior transfers get priority housing options in terms of dorms. When I was browsing around for information I found out that there were only 175 slots in Unit 2 that are reserved for upper-division undergrads in the Wada complex. Now a lot of those slots will most likely be given to the regent scholars who have priority consideration, so how likely is it that I will be given admission into a dorm as a junior transfer?

Also can anyone shed some light on the new student meal plan? I heard it is no longer a free buffet but there is some sort of point system, can anyone confirm?

Hah all of my friends who are junior transfer live in dorms if they chose. I know one girl who is a transfer but she didn’t want to live in dorms because she didn’t want to be with freshman but the other 3 did get into dorms. You also have the option of taking a single and I highly recommend that if you are easily peeved by other people getting in your way.

All of the dining halls are buffet style, and you DO use ur points but it’s buffet style. When you enter, they take 6-8 points depending on what time of day it is, and then u can get as much/little food as you want. Places like Golden Bear Cafe charge you points per item. like 4.50 for one burger. If you like to cook, i recommend not staying in dorms and getting a single apartment or find someone.

Wait I thought there were certain units that are reserved for upper division undergrads, so all the juniors and seniors dorm together or is that not the case for transfers? Also, I thought singles weren’t easily given out and that only people with special cases got to live in a single. Also, are there any transfers who would like to chime in and give their opinions about living in dorms vs renting a nearby apartment.

No I know transfer in all of the different units actually. And the one in unit 2 is not in Wada. because those are “apartments”. and there is some truth to 1234’s comment lol

and singles I guess are given out to transfer just as easily as they are given out to people with special cases.

Also, if you like being around people or knowing that there are people just outside your door, dorms are a good idea. but if you are not going to talk to any freshman or whatever and u want to keep to yourself, then i suggest apartments. i know someone in the dorms who doesn’t talk to anyone on our floor and he’s always pessimistic. he’s a junior so i think he should’ve chosen apartments lol

Thank you for your responses, were you a freshman Berkeley admit or a transfer? Would it be possible for you to describe your overall experience with the housing at berkeley? Any horror stories about roommates?
