Dorms Thread

I was just accepted into the Honors Program (and ED1) and will not be living on the Mount Vernon campus as I was told it isn’t necessary. I’m going to GW because I love the urban feel, so I want to live on the urban campus. I’m not worried about meeting fellow Honors students…I expect we will get to know each other through classes and such. Now I have to find a roommate willing to live in Lafayette as opposed to Potomac or Thurston…those seem to be the popular dorms.

I’m doing my best to avoid Thurston and Vernon like the plague.

So there is a very small chance for singles?

That’s too bad…

I was accepted to the Honors program and I can’t decide what I want to do in terms of housing. The information sheet in the admission offer really made it seem like living at Mount Vernon was the way to go but I don’t know that I want to be that far away from Fobo. On top of that, I’ve seen/heard enough about Thurston to know that it’s probably not my top choice in terms of dorms, and the newly-renovated West Hall does look pretty nice. Decisions, decisions… :D

If there are any folks out there who did live on the Vern as a freshman, can you talk about whether or not it really made that much of a difference in terms of social life, etc?

Thanks and congrats everyone! :)

I live on the Vern right now. My dorm is smaller than West though, plus it’s pretty anti social. But it’s mostly cuz ppl on the Vern (and in my dorm) usually go to foggy and just stay there for the rest of the day because they have most of their classes there. It really doesn’t impact your social life because you’re still surrounded by many people. Especially at West and Somers. And if you really want to party and meet even more ppl, then you can just head down to foggy. It’s not hard. Ppl just hate it because of the commute. Also, it’s a bit easier to commute now because they got rid of the every 30min shuttle waiting time for the late hours. There’s now a shuttle every 5min from 8am-7pm on Mon-Fri, every 15min after 7pm on Mon-Fri, and every 15 on weekends. It’s so much more convenient. Especially whenever I’m down at foggy at like 12am. So yeah don’t worry, you’ll still make friends.

Also, you should see if most of your classes are on the vern. Your honors requirements should all be on the vern since the program moved up to there. Idr the typical # of honors requirements freshmen take in one semester, but if they take up over half your schedule then I would def recommend the vern. You can ask GWUHP for more info i guess.

Alright, I have three questions:

1) Can you loft the beds in all the dorms?
2) Is there AC in all the dorms?
3) Is there cable in all the dorms?

@collegejawn

 1. no, i think most of foggy bottom’s beds you can, but you definitely can’t loft most of the vern’s beds. i believe you can only loft West’s (but there’s really no reason to because you get spacious singles/suites) and MAYBE Somers. though i’m pretty sure you can’t loft somers’ either.
 2. & 3) yes. :)

what are the odds of getting into thurston if you list it as your top choice? i’m wary of the “party” reputation, but it’s the cheapest freshman dorm haha

you’ll almost definitely get it if its your first choice.

also i heard that if you’re RD and you put down any MV halls at all, no matter the place, you’ll be there

What are the upsides of Lafayette and Crawford? I’m interested mainly in Potomac, but their rooms seemed pretty small

I, too, would like to know about Lafayette. It wasn’t available to visit on the admitted students day, but I hear it got renovated last year and is very nice.

Would current students agree that the MV campus is a lot quieter and more mello than Foggy Bottom?

Drugs, alcohol, and partying aren’t my thing.

Adamb15: I would say it seems pretty mellow. I went on the campus one time and it looked almost dead! You wouldn’t even think college students lived there xD

@adam MV is beautiful :slight_smile: and so is west esp. but the shuttle can be a big hassle esp at like 8am with rush hour and stuff like that . but if you want the quiet, stay there :)

@Adam15
I’m not huge into partying either, that’s one of the reasons why I chose the Vern. Yeah it’s pretty mellow because most ppl have classes on foggy bottom, so they just stay down there for most of the day. Plus ppl do think the travel is a hassle. But the vern is nonetheless gorgeous, especially right now in this 80+ degree weather! Ppl are on the lawn/quad tanning and studying; it’s just so serene. I also really like the surrounding neighborhood; it’s really pretty. Oh and there’s a CVS, Safeway, and other local stores nearby, so you don’t have to worry about that.

Thanks for the answers you three.

Adababy845, where did you hear that people who pick MV will get in easily?

Ah, past the editing time limit

Cont:

Also, is there anything else incoming freshmen should know about any of the dorms that the GW website doesn’t tell us?

So they are no longer offering Lafayette as a Freshman residence hall. Which is, unfortunately, the one I wanted to stay in. There are now only 4 dorms on the Foggy Bottom campus available to freshman. Which sucks.

adam,
my friend told me. she listed somers as the very last one, she got it .

but its mainly RD

adababy845, how many do they ask you to list? Because with only 4 choices on Foggy Bottom, you’re going to have to list some MV dorms (if they make you list more than 4).
