Which is better? I'm an incoming freshman and I am not all that concerned with distance from classes (perhaps I am naive here?). I am more concerned with quality of rooms, food, and social life. Thanks!

Definitely go for Clark Kerr then, though it might be “easier” to have a good social life if you lived in Unit 3 just due to location. It is very similar to Stanford’s dorms (aka huge). The dining common there is probably the best one (in my opinion) at Berkeley.

I’ve heard they have spiders though…and so does foothill lol. But the rooms are ginormous (a triple there has no bunk beds!!!..compared to my unit 3 matchbox lol). There is a price difference though, which is why I chose unit 3 over foothill, if that makes any difference in your case at all.

The food at clark kerr isnt that good and they DC is only open for dinner, you have to go somewhere else if you want to eat breakfast or lunch. I would personally pick unit 3, the rooms are smaller, but you are probably not even gonna be in your room that often. Clark Kerr is really far.

How far is Clark Kerr really? How long does it take to walk there? Is the shuttle service convenient?

And is there really a price difference? On the Living at Cal website the room prices are displaced the same in Clark Kerr and in the units…

Presumably, the housing web site’s price list is the correct one.

Clark Kerr may have been more expensive in the past for the same nominal type of room. It may also have more expensive types of rooms than some of the others (e.g. single/double/triple in suite). In most of the non-suite buildings (3, 4, 7, 8), the second and third floor rooms are larger than the first floor rooms.

Distances in miles from dorms to Evans (math, physics, chemistry, computer science, and engineering are near here):

Unit 1: 0.55
Unit 2: 0.67
Unit 3: 0.60
Clark Kerr: 0.96
Foothill or Stern: 0.25
Bowles: 0.32

Distance in miles from dorms to Dwinelle (humanities are here; biology is near here):

Unit 1: 0.42
Unit 2: 0.55
Unit 3: 0.31
Clark Kerr: 1.02
Foothill or Stern: 0.57
Bowles: 0.44

Distance from dorms to Tolman (psychology is here):

Unit 1: 1.11
Unit 2: 1.23
Unit 3: 0.85
Clark Kerr: 1.39
Foothill or Stern: 0.59
Bowles: 0.75

http://gmap-pedometer.com can show you distances. Note, however, that the west side of campus is downhill from the east side of campus. Clark Kerr, Foothill, Stern, and Bowles are uphill from the campus.

Unit 3 is like 2-3mn from campus… Clark Kerr is probably 15mn… so prepare to walk a lot of us the bus every time you need to get to/from campus.

Food wise, Clark Kerr is not better than Crossroads or Cafe 3…

Rooms are nice in beverly cleary, and they’re okay in the rest of unit 3. Otherwise, Clark Kerr is a lot bigger, looks newer i think. Food is better at unit 3 and crossroads (which is closer to unit 3). Social Life is really a toss up…well unit 3 floors usually go out and party together, get food together, etc but i’m sure clark kerr people try to do the same. it’s just a lot quieter over there in CK.

Honestly, if you’re lazy choose unit 3. it’s close to everything and it’s safer usually because more people are around if anything happens.

How convenient is the bus from CK to the campus? Does it come regularly/follow a bus schedule?

it’s pretty inconvenient. comes every 30 mins i’m pretty sure. and it’s only one bus. the one at unit 3 has like 1-3 buses you could take and they come more often.

Clark Kerr has by far the best dining hall coming from someone in Unit 1. They have less selection but the food is superb in comparison to Crossroads and even Cafe 3.

Is it inconvenient getting breakfast/lunch at other places because the CKC dining hall doesn’t offer it?
