Can someone help me out on choosing a hall? I'm a spring admit, not part of fpf.

Some insight on the better halls would be greatly appreciated and some advice on which halls to stay away from would be great as well.
Thanks!

What are your criteria? Room size? Distance to specific parts of campus? etc.?

Honestly I’m not the type of person to complain, I do with what I have and make the best of it. I’m just trying to figure out which is generally known as the better dorm or which hall has better assets.

My friends say unit 3 or Clark Kerr. Would you agree?

Clark Kerr is far, but if you don’t mind that then it’s better than unit 3. Personally, I’d rather live in unit 3: it’s close, newer, and bear market is right in your courtyard.

So I’m guessing both unit 3 and Clark Kerr are generally considered ‘better’ than unit 1 and unit 2?

eyedeaa: It really depends on what you want. The units are all pretty much the same. I’ve lived in Unit 1 (mini-suite) and Unit 2 (Wada, apartments/transfer housing). Between the two types of buildings it’s pretty different, but for freshmen in a mini-suite/highrise it’s more or less the same in any unit. So the biggest factor there is just location.

Unit 1 is pretty close to campus, and if your classes are on east side, you’re in luck. I think it’s also the closest to the frats and stuff, if you’re into that.

Unit 2 feels farther away… the walks I got used to last semester all take an extra 5 minutes now. But as upper-div, it’s totally worth it if you’re in the apartments.

Unit 3 is close to Sproul, and has the Bear Market and Cafe 3 pretty close. It’s a bit farther from Crossroads… but meal points work anywhere, so it’s not like you can’t go to a dining hall if it’s not the closest thing to your dorm.

Foothill I haven’t really been to, I think it’s all suites, and I’ve heard good things about it. It’s really close to the engineering corner of campus, and really far from downtown. (I think Bowles and Stern are near there too? But those two are different than the other halls.)

Clark Kerr is kinda far away from everything, though I’ve heard the rooms are bigger. Bit of a hike if you don’t like buses.

Martinez and the other apartments are for upper div or continuing students only, so you don’t need to worry about them (though they’re probably the best campus-owned housing).

Moral of this story is, there’s no best place to be, it really depends on what you want/need. The type of room you go for will also affect things, and location-wise they’re all pretty different. So, do some research, and don’t expect people to just be able to make a decision for you. By the way, the housing lottery really sucks sometimes, so you might not get your first choice, so be open to other possibilities if you don’t get your favorite Unit. :P

Stern (all female) is right next to Foothill. Bowles (all male) is a little bit to the south, near the business school and chemistry areas and between the Greek Theater and Memorial Stadium. There is a mini downtown on the north side of campus (Euclid Avenue).

At Clark Kerr, the regular rooms off of a hall are generally larger than those in Unit 1/2/3. The 2nd and 3rd floor rooms in buildings 3/4/7/8 tend to be especially large, so that even triples can have plenty of space without bunk beds.

If proximity to classes is a concern, note that sometimes classes can be in buildings away from the departments, although they are usually closer. Typical places:

Latimer, Lewis, Tan: chemistry

Cory, Davis, Soda, Etcheverry: engineering

LeConte: physics

Evans: math, economics

Valley Life Sciences, various buildings northwest: biology

Tolman: psychology

Kroeber: anthropology

Dwinelle: various humanities

Wheeler: giant (~700) lectures, various other classes

Pimentel: large (~500) lectures
