Housing Choices

I'm most likely going to put Clark Kerr as my top choices and am going to put one or two of the lower choices as one of the Units (and my last as any).
Anyone want to share experiences from living in any of the Units?
I'm looking for a fun, social environment. Also, do they all have dining commons in the building? If so, does the food at one of the Units surpass the others?

For some reason from looking online about the Units I've mostly only found out about Unit 1 and Unit 3. So I guess if no one has anything good to say about Unit 2, I'll probably be deciding between those two.

Thanks for any information!

Do not do Clark Kerr if you’re looking for a fun, social environment! It is really far from campus, you have to take a bus like everytime. And most of the people there are athletes on Cal teams. The only plus really is room size, but that is not going to matter as much as the closeness and the people around you.

Units are much closer to campus - 1 and 3 are one block from campus, unit 2 is 3 blocks from campus. For food, Units 1 and 2 share Crossroads while Unit 3 has Cafe 3 inside it. The food is similar for both but Cafe 3 is smaller and much nicer. All the units are good for meeting people and people from every major are there so you should have an easy time making friends. And although the triples are cramped, the doubles are really nice and you will have more than enough space to fit all your stuff. Go with the units!

Really? I mean besides from it being far from campus I’ve heard it’s fun, but maybe I’m wrong.

If you had to pick between the Units, which would you choose?

Well Clark Kerr is probably more fun than Foothill/Stern, but I’ve mostly just heard complaining about the distance from campus and the takeover of the place by athletes. I’ve lived in Unit 3 for 2 years and I think it’s the best :). But Units 1 and 2 are good too.

Why do you think it’s the best?

Sorry for all the questions

Unit 2 and unit 1 are identical except for the distance. If you head from the edge of the campus outward, you have the block with unit 1, a block that is a parking garage, the dining commons and a field on the roof, then unit 3.

From a strategy standpoint, consider that most people will prioritize the nearer units in their choices, and there are far more people going to be assigned into triples than doubles. Thus, a doubles request in unit 2 has a better shot than a double in the other units. Might be the same logic for CK - a request for a room type in limited supply in CK is more likely to be handed out than one for the more requested dorms.

of course, if you get a early slot and only put down unit 2, you will have lost an opportunity to get your ideal room assignment. Depends on the luck of the draw and how much you want to manipulate your chances instead of simply listing your ideal priorities.

Just for reference, Jahvid Best was living in Clark Kerr in the fall…then got drafted to the NFL. Not that THAT matters, just a fun fact. But its really far, so bring a bike or take the bus. I’ve also heard its pretty isolated because of the distance. Sure, its a few blocks away from frat row, but NO ONE goes over there except for people who live there and friends.

I live in Unit 3 and I like it. The only problem is that I’m in a triple (my 4th choice) and it gets a little crowded, especially with a messy roommate. But the doubles in the Units are spacious and everything you’d expect from a dorm. I like Crossroads more than Cafe 3 for some reason, but that’s preference I guess. Crossroads I felt had better quality of food, especially for dinner. But whichever unit you live in, its not too hard to get to the other dining hall. Unit 3 has Bear Market (a place where you can buy just about anything 9 AM-2 AM) while Unit 1/2 have Late Night (junk food from 10PM-2 AM).

hey foothill is nice IF you have a good suite. and stern well the layout sucks, hence why its boring. but i’d go with unit one - close to late night, in between the other 2 units, and closer to the northside of campus.

I’ve heard Foothill is really quiet though, that’s why I don’t want to put it as one of my choices. I’m looking for a fun and social environment like I’ve heard the Units have (although I did visit and thought the Foothill dorms were quite nice).

Thanks for all the information, everyone!

Oh! I actually have another question. Would you recommend trying to find and request a roommate or just going with the random assignment?

gkor10 - Quietness is what people usually associate with Foothill, but from my experience it’s not always true. My suite in Foothill was loud as hell and everyone was really social. There are some suites however where I heard that people don’t even come out of their rooms. So it really depends if you get lucky or not, but Foothill being quiet is not always true.
