Dorms vs. Single Living Space

My first question is whether or not incoming freshmens are required to live in dorms. I am debating on renting a single room somewhere nearby because dorms cost too much for my family too afford. I really want to meet people but I am not sure if it is worth paying the extra money to do so. I am sure there are other ways to meet people other than dorms.

If you can live on campus you should do so. Many studies show that Freshman do MUCH better academically if they live on campus. You will meet more people particularlyFreshman on campus. Lastly, Isla Vista is kind of a zoo. Living there might be a bit much your first year.
