I hear of many dorms at umich including many quads and other strange names, can someone give me the lowdown on what the different dorms are, what style and how nice they are? I hear there are new single living dorms as well as traditional style.

Markley is amazing, and anything on north campus sucks.

What are the different quads?

north quad is the best and nicest because its the newest dorm building. but you wont get in it because its almost all sophomore/junior. West quad/east quad are older buildings but still nice. the food sucks there though.

alice lloyd and markeley are even older and rooms are small and pretty ratty but they are both nice places to be. plus mojo and markeley dining halls are fantastic, and both are close by.

East Quad and West Quad are both older than Markley.

South quad has pretty big rooms and a nice dining hall (but not as nice as Mojo, which has more options). In my experience, it isn’t known as being either a party dorm or a study dorm. You find a lot of both types of people there. West quad is mostly for athletes (at least it was) and Markley definitely has a more social feel to it. Markley also, in addition to the cafeteria, has a basement place where they make typical american grilled food that is actually pretty good.

I thought East Quad was pretty nice when I lived there last year-- big rooms, clean, not too terrible to look at on the inside-- has music practice rooms, a theater, and a dance studio, but the cafeteria there serves a lot of ethnic food. The food they serve is not poor quality so if you like what they’re serving you’ll be happy, but if not you’ll have to walk somewhere else-- a lot of students last year ate on the hill or at south quad, but they’re all pretty close so not that big of a deal. It’s probably the best place on campus for vegans and vegetarians to live, because they have at least one (usually more) vegan option at every meal, including some things that are vegetarian but not vegan. The campus as a whole is very friendly for that lifestyle but EQ caters to it in particular.

For any girls that happen to read this thread, I feel like a complete moron for not living in one of the all girls houses last year. I don’t know about Martha Cook, but Newberry and Barbour are vastly superior to any dorm I have ever walked into. I am actually disappointed that I won’t be able to live here next year since I am graduating.
