dorms

I emailed a former classmate of mine who goes to uchicago, and this is what she said:

B-J is all singles, and the people tend to be kind of introverted and wierd, also its kind of far from most stuff on campus. Max P is very central, very nice, and very new. Its humongous, so there's a huge variety of people. Its probably the best choice for you, and you probably have a good chance of getting it. I'm living in Pierce, which I think is the coolest, it certainly has the most character. Our dining hall is in our dorm (B-J's is as well, though their food is terrible, Max P's is in a separate building and their food is slightly better). Our rooms are tiny but cozy and I really don't mind how small it is. I think Pierce is the most social of the dorms, we are in each other's rooms all the time, and the house lounge is used a lot too. Our bathrooms are kind of funky but I'm not very picky about that stuff. So I guess if you want a more hygenic looking newer more generic thing, I would go for Max P, but if you're willing to risk a little for a possibly better social atmosphere, go Pierce. You've got the right idea on the whole though, definitely don't do any of the farther away dorms, its really frickin' cold and you don't want to have to walk that far.

Now i'm thinking i might like Pierce..or maybe max p, but not b-j.

As a transfer student, this is what I want:
A single. With a private bath. With an elevator.

My choices in order are:
Shoreland
Broadview
Blackstone
Maclean

Elevator is definately a deal breaker - think about that in Max P.

I'm just not sure how I'd deal with a community bathroom. B-J sounds really good for me, but community bathroom? I'm not the typical prissy girl, but I like my privacy. Is it that bad? I only have one friend that goes to UChicago, and that's a guy. So, that's a bit different.

thanks brooke....I'm really leaning towards Max P and Piarce right now

My daughter lives in BJ, and she is neither introverted nor weird (well, I'm sure about the introverted part at least). Just kidding. Seriously, her house is very social and she goes downtown every weekend. She loves having a single because she has privacy when she wants it. But if she leaves her door open and the music on, it draws a crowd.

If I go, I'm leaning toward Max P and Pierce.
I think as far as the dorm goes, social atmosphere = most important thing.
And I'd always be late for the Shorey bus, so it's too far away.

Hey guys - I'm a first year at U of C this year and I live in the Shoreland which I absolutely LOVE. Honestly, my first choice was Max last year because (1) it really is quite close to the main quad, (2) the rooms are nice, new, etc.

That said, I think the Shoreland is great for many reasons too... yes, it may be farther away, but there are buses (cta and u of c run) that come right up to the building. They run every 10 minutes in the morning, 15-30 minutes in the afternoon, and then every 10 minutes during the dinner hours. After then, the evening buses (5 routes) run every 30 minutes (two of them come to the shoreland).

Other than that, the rooms are amazingly large; as a first year, I have a quad (shared with three other first years) that has: 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room, a dining room, and a kitchen. The rest of the rooms are a mix of triples (with a kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedroom), doubles (with private bathroom), other quads, and a few singles. And the size of the rooms make hosting parties quite easy =) yes, there are u of c students who party... But if you want to study, just close your door, and it'll be fine.

In addition to all that, the 6 (bus) is just two blocks away (this is probably the easiest way to get downtown) plus the 55, a line that goes to the red line, green line, and midway airport and that the Shoreland is the dorm that is the closest to most Hyde Park restaurants and "attractions" (honestly, the neighborhood isn't that interesting) puts the city at your feeet. Some of the kids I know who live in Snell-Hitchcock or Max don't really even leave their little bubble on campus, which is a shame considering how much there is to explore.

So, yeah, that's just my two cents. If you can get through that jumble (sorry, my brain shut down after finals) I think there are definite benefits to living in the Shoreland. And if anyone has questions...just ask!

I'm a first-year too, and i've spent time in all of the dorms. I live in BJ, it was my first choice and I love it. Snell-hitchcock are both great, IF you get in, and are optimally located. They also win scav hunt. I love the rooms in the shoreland, but the feel of the house isnt the same when a house is actually a floor in a hotel. And the rooms are carpeted, so the floor is a bit yucky. I have a single, like most people in my house, but i'd say this has little to do with how social a dorm is. They all have a great personality- but shoreland is far-away, and its main advantage is there's a stop for the 6 (the bus that goes downtown) right outside of it. Pierce has TERRIBLE food. The Bj food is good, but Bartlett is by far the best food, so consider Max P seriously. Max also has central heating and a/c. Macclean is in a dismal location- there's a hefty walk to classes, and a lot of people, meaning the feel of a tiny intimate house is lacking. Oh, and the shoreland is gonna be torn down soon, so keep in mind that if you move there you will be displaced your second year.

Hey, could any UofC students elaborate on Pierce social life/"inside scoop" on the living situation?

For a discussion of U of C dorms see: http://www.livejournal.com/community/uchicago/249341.html

I think i'm definitely choosing max p as my top choice now, and pierce as my second..

I don't care about a fcking 1 mile distance with bus service. My current school is 8 or 30 miles with spotty transit depending on the day.
