Hi! I know that NU has LLCs, but are they specific to certain residence halls? All I can find on their site is that they have "10 co-ed residence halls", but I was hoping to know about where the dining halls are located within them, which are more preferred, etc. Thanks for any help!

You don’t get to choose your dorm, you just choose your LLC. I think the dorms that each LLC is in vary each year, but I’m not 100% positive. Stetson East & West as well as IV have dining halls. IV is the best dining hall by far, just because it has the biggest selection. I think White Hall is probably the best freshman dorm. I’m living there this year and it has a nice, homey feel to it. But there are mice! I’ve heard that Speare & the Stetsons are very prison-like and IV is just weird because it’s so much like a hospital in a way. I only thing really good about IV is the size of the rooms and the fact that you have a semi-private bathroom. These are just things that I have heard though, I haven’t been in any of the other dorms that often because White Hall is awesome! There’s a kitchen on the first floor!

Don’t really know much about the other freshmen dorms.

Thank you so much for your help! Which LLC are you in? Are there any that are more popular than others?

337 Huntingdon was the Pre-med (but anyone could sign up for it) LLC this year; I think it was the only freshman dorm space that was apartment style. Not sure if it’s an option this year.

West/East are the more social dorms, IV supposedly feels isolated. Speare and Melvin (where I ended up) aren’t great. I also hear 153 Hemenway and Kennedy are nice - suite style, instead of traditional housing.

Like others said, you choose the LLC not the dorm. I’d try to pick one that is most relevant to your interests, not just where you want to live as they change every year. My favorite dorm is 337 Huntington - a lot of my friend live there and they all have apartment style rooms. But I’m pretty sure that 337 will be an upperclassman dorm next year. I live in Stetson East, and it’s a typical freshman dorm. Small rooms, but everything has been renovated so things aren’t too bad. It’s also pretty nice having a dining hall right downstairs.

Eh, I wouldn’t worry too much about where you end up, they all aren’t terrible. Plus, you only have to suffer one year because the upperclassmen housing is generally pretty nice.

Not that you get to choose it anyway, but IV for freshmen is definitely not isolated. I live here now and everyone’s out in the common rooms all day anyway. Everyone in the same group with the same RA knows each other, and most of the other people in the building with the same major.

And having your own bathroom and for some people own room is definitely a major plus.

what are the honors dorms like?

The honors dorms are very nice. For your freshman year you’re placed in International Village in either a single or double. IV is the newest dorm, if you’ve been to campus its the really tall white one. It has three separate towers, with I think 8, 12 and 20 floors respectively. One of the nicest perks is that you have a shared bathroom with only two rooms. So either two doubles share a bathroom (4 people) or two singles (2 people), as opposed to regular freshman dorms where anywhere from 10-20 people share a common bathroom. Also, IV has it’s own dining hall, computer commons, and classrooms in the basement. It has a gym on the second floor that is exclusive to residents of IV and open 24/7. The only bad part about living in IV is it’s a bit of a hike to the freshman quad where you’ll probably be hanging out a lot, it takes about a 10 minute walk. While that doesn’t seem like a lot, there will be plenty of nights where it seems extremely far. IV is conveniently located directly next to the Ruggles T stop on the Orange line and less than 5 minutes from the Engineering, Arts & Music & Bouve Health class buildings.

Your sophomore year you are guaranteed to live in West Village F. It’s pretty typical as far as West Villages go, but West Village dorms are thee nicest dorms on campus. They are all apartment style, with anywhere from 4-7 people living in them. You’ll have either one or two bathrooms depending on how many students are living in the apartment, and each apartment must be single sex. There are singles in the apartments which you can request. You have a full kitchen and living room.

Both of these dorms are in the higher cost brackets of dorms, but if that is not an issue I would definitely suggest taking advantage of the honors housing; you will love it!
