What are the types of dorms and what are they like?

There are traditional dorms, suite rooms, and apartment-styled rooms. The apartment-styled rooms are almost inaccessible to those who are not seniors, unless you got real lucky. The suite rooms are good and mainly in Hilltop and South Campus. They have bunked or separate beds (above desk). The desks are likely to be right under the beds. Rooms seem to be nice, but I’ve only seen a room in Hilltop Dorm (orientation) and a suite room in South (summer class nxt wk).

I’m a freshman, so may not be too helpful. Not many UConn’ers in CC though…

You’ll probably be in a double freshman year unless you make a request otherwise on the housing form. I’ve heard that most of the freshman dorms are fairly similar and vary mostly by location. After that it varies more. All of them are at least decent but there are some that are newer, closer to central campus, and overall of nicer quality. Students that currently attend and live in Connecticut Commons (new dorm in the center of campus) have told me that housing is offered by who has the most credits first (ie upperclassmen) and then honors students are given some advantages. You do have to live 15 minutes across campus for your first year of honors, however.

You will most likely be placed into a double for your freshman year although that is not guarenteed since some people I know ended up in triples although at UConn it appears that some people actually desire to be in triples. As far as which dorm you are assigned to, you will receive that around early august if i remember correctly along with your roommate assignment. Most freshmen are placed in dorms such as : North, Northwest, and Towers. although you are not limited to those I know some people you got EAST, Mcmahon, Shippee, and the honors students are placed in Buckley. Each has its pros and cons based on location and each has its own dining hall except Shippee which is next to Buckley. Most of the rooms are very similar in layout and size and you have the choice of either lofting your bed and putting your desk underneath it or lowering the bed and moving your desk else where which decreases the space in the room. Do not worry about suites or apartments for now since you will not get either unless they somehow run out of room in traditional dorms for you. The housing selection is based on the number of credits you have so you will not get those until around Junior year.
