DS is applying to Temple as he qualified w/ the 33 ACT score, for the full tuition.

How is the dorm situation there? I was looking at the Honors Dorms and they seem very nice. IF he gets accepted, will he be able to dorm there all 4 years he's at Temple?

I would prefer he not live off campus, but is that a possibility?

my son likes the honors dorm. it is acutually part of one dorm, i want to say floors 3 -5 of dorm “1300”. teh first 2 floors of 1300 are not honots. and yes, i think if ur son stays in honors, he can stay at taht dorm all 4 years. morgan dormitory, which is not honors, is per my son, teh nicest dorm on campus. however, 1300 is next to morgan, on the nice side of campus, and prety nice too. check with the honors dept to make sure the kids can still stay on campus all 4 years.

i know soem kids move off campus because there are less rules. the dorms have very strict rules about signing people in and out which annoy many students. also, in theory, there is no alcohol in the dorms and if someone is caught with alchohol, there are a lot of consequences. i say in theory because it seems alcohol gets into the dorms anyway. so i suspect some kids may move off campus due to the above reasons. in the past, there were not enough dorm rooms for all students from what I heard. however, with teh addtion of morgan, there may be enough dorm rooms now. Yes, soem of the campus off housing is cheaper, but given the surrounding area, i would not reccommend it until your kid has actually lived on campus and in philly and knows where to pick an apartment and what areas to avoid. Temple is in the middle of one of the worst areas in philly. the campus itself is very safe but you have to be VERY careful selecting off campus housing. there is one place off campus called teh view which is right next to campus. The View at Montgomery; it looks nice on the internet and i met one family at orientation, who were very familar with Philly, who were excited to have their kids move in there. it is right next to campus. that being said, i was there one afternoon and there were a couple of guys milling around the corner of the view apartments and the temple campus. right off campus. from my unexpereinced eye, i had to wonder if they were drug dealers. and honestly, even with it being next to campus, it did not seem as safe as 1 to 2 blocks southwest, where 1300 is. my son also mentioned that some of his schoomates have heard gun shots that live off campus, The general rule of thumb is the closer to campus the better when selecting off campus housing.

and sorry, re yuor first question, yes, it is common for kids to move off campus. however, morgan is new, this is maybe the second year. so with more available spots on campus now, it’s hard to say if the trend to move off campus will continue as it’s too soon to know yet
