Hello everyone! I'm definitely going to Pitzer this fall! I'm excited. :D
Congrats to everyone else who got in! I hope to meet you in the fall.

I was wondering what is and isn't allowed in the dorm rooms. Are pets allowed? I want to bring my newts with me. Is there a set size for the aquarium that's allowed? Can we bring a coffee maker or a rice cooker? Are there shared kitchens in each dorm? Do all dorms have air conditioning? Would you suggest bringing one of those foam coverings for the bed, or are the beds comfortable enough?

thanks! ^_^

All the pet stuff will be covered in the housing packet you get a little later on, but here are the few things I know:
-The rule on pets is that "only non-meat-eating fish in aquariums up to ten gallons are allowed". I would call the housing people later on to ask if newts would be prohibited.
-Coffee makers are allowed, but rice cookers aren't.
-There will be kitchens available.
-All of the freshman dorms have air-conditioning.
-The beds are pretty comfortable since they're brand new, but I got one of those foam things from Costco and now my dorm bed is far more comfortable than my home bed. Still, they're probably not necessary.

Erm, sorry to burst your bubble, but the new dorms have cross-ventilation, not air conditioning.

Cross-ventilation merely means that there are windows/openings on both sides of the room which allows air to flow through the room naturally. It doesn't meant that Pitzer is using it to replace air-conditioning. Its Southern California... enough said.

No idea at all whether the new Pitzer dorms will have AC, but "it's Southern California...enough said" is definitely not sufficient proof that they do. 5 Scripps dorms are unairconditioned, all but 2 of Pomona's dorms are unairconditioned, and I imagine the other campuses each have a few, as well. In all honesty, it's not a big deal for more than 2-3 days out of each year.

That said, most of the un-AC dorms are quite old, so it would make sense for the new Pitzer dorms to be better equipped. But with all the effort they're putting into making the buildings hyper-green, I also wouldn't be surprised if cross-ventilation is all they have. Either way, like I said, truly not that big of a deal (surprisingly).

Okay, let me reiterate. I KNOW, and am not just speculating, that the new dorms will have air-conditioning.

thanks for the information everyone. ^_^

First, you'll most likely be able to bring your newts with you. The general rule is no furry animals since that affects allergies. Freshmen year I had hermit crabs and the RA even helped take care of them during fall break. Your newts should be fine.

Second, the new dorms will NOT have air conditioning. Originally, I was told the dorms would have AC, but they are actually being designed so you won't need it at all since it is damaging to the environment and a waste of energy. Part of the green friendly implementation of the dorms is cross-venhilation instead of air conditioning. This is actually part of the school's original charter to be as environmentally sound as possible. The new dorms are designed so that it will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer with out the use of AC/heating systems; however, I assume that they will have heaters much like they do in the current dorms anyway. If you want all the details on the new dorms and the "face lift" pitzer's campus will be recieving in the following years the information is available from the website http://www.pitzer.edu/rlp/masterplan/housing_master_plan.pdf. This won't answer questions about rice cookers, pets, and the like, but it will give you information on the plans for the dorms.

Speaking of air conditioning. You honestly do not need it here. Heat is only a problem during August and maybe the first week or two of September. As long as you have a fan or two you will be fine. I arrived early freshmen year for pre-season sports training and sophomore year for mentor training and while it was hot as hell outside, my floor fan made my room the perfect temperture.

yay, I'm glad to hear that. ^_^ thanks.

Both of my sons have spent their high school years in non-air conditioned dorms about two miles from Pitzer - - - never a complaint, but it is nice to have at least a small fan.

1 son is Harvey Mudd '10 and #2 will be Pitzer '11.

The new dorms WILL have air conditioning. This is coming to you via an administrator directly involved in the building design.
