Dorms!!

I have a question for current students..

So far, I have gotten this impression from students about the dorms:

SUsanB= smaller; bathrooms are not as nice; nice common area in the middle of everything; and better social atmosphere; lots of storage space

Gilbert= bigger; better bathrooms; not as nice a social atmosphere; smaller storage space

hoeing= smaller rooms than gilbert; more storage space (bathrooms? social atmosphere?)

Is this accurate? I am leaning towards Gilbert, but I don't want to only know freshman in my hallway. Would it be as easy to meet people living in Gilbert as it would be in susanB? I've heard that you can go in and out of Gilbert/Hoeing without meeting anyone from another hallway..

Thanks

ive been to susan b dorms and they are nice. But then again its only a college dorm room.

you got it right archdelux, but i want to impress on one thing. I talked to a -lot- of people, and they said that that the social atmosphere is best at sueb, but by no means is Gilbert's or Hoeing's social atmosphere dead. It is live and well at them all. Another student actually gave me some useful information in saying that Hoeing is the best of both worlds, it's Big (bigger than SueB, smaller slightly than Gilbert), has some storage, and has a good social atmosphere which is better than gilbert's (again this doesnt mean much).

And dont feel like omg "Gilbert's the biggest, i'll choose that", because when it is all put together and examined, the trade-offs with storage and all free space and all that stuff makes all of them about equal, it's just personal comfort of which you would feel most at home at and what you require for yourself (food in your residance building? = SueB, or your res. being on the quad = Hoeing/Gilbert) ... all that jazz, if you want any more info ( i think i have a lot of this stuff down pat) holler at me via aim: TimurMD.

What is the structure of Hoeing like? I have heard that because SueB has a core that every student goes through, everyone meets everyone else, while because Gilbert doesn't have this, the social scene is not as active..

Also.. what is the bathroom situation @ Hoeing? similar to SueB or Gilbert?

Lastly.. Do most kids usually get their first choice dorm? I haven't even gotten my dorm packet yet (soon I hope?).

thx

EDs get their choice of dorms first...
Each of these dorms have a different structure => contributes to the social scene. I believe that SueB has X structure so there are 4 wings (the X is like a birds eye view of the building from atop). Then Hoeing has a T structure, followed by Gilbert with like many crazy angles. Thats the physical "structure" of the buildings. hahah but then again i'm thinking you probably mean like over-all structure. Just think about Gilbert and SueB as the two extremes and then place Hoeing in the middle as a sort-of hybrid. That should explain it...the structure of a T seems to give a core, it's no-where like SueB with that common area, but it beats Gilbert.. hahaha. But then again Gilbert has better bathrooms/rooms/ all that jazz (newly renovated) Hoeings bathroom and situation is again in the middle, SueB i believe was the longest since renovation, and Gilbert was newly renovated in the late nineties, Hoeing was sometime in late Eighties..soo...yeah.

Hoeing has a common area or no? I know Sueb does and Gilbert doesnt, but what about hoeing? Also.. gilbert is supposed to have the bathrooms with the extra shower area.. does Hoeing have this too?

update regarding my previous question: no common area in hoeing.. still don't know about the bathrooms though..

I have a question regarding substance-free housing.. Is this a separate residence hall alltogethor (apart from sueb, gilbert, hoeing)? Also what is the difference (besides the obvious) between substance-free and the others? (smaller rooms, no food indoors, etc..?)

Thanks

i thought substance free housing is present near the fraternity quad. It's sorta like a frat but without pledging and stuff.

how is the network at URoch in any of those dorms?

pretty good. they have all the dorms networked, wilson commons has wireless coverage as does the main quad. Rochester also has internet2.

really? Wow-- I didn't know that.. So Sueb does not have wireless internet, and Gilbert/Hoeing do?

hey,
(im jake btw)
ive been to SuB and ive seen ppics of gilbert a hoeing and from what i can tell they are all great in their own way
~gilbert is huge with great bathrooms -- but no storage space
~hoeing is a little less huge with a little storage space
~SuB is on the larger side of medium with a shizzle load of storage and a DINING HALL and cafe (in each room, jk)

but...from what ive heard SuB is further from the classes so not as good in the winter--which is all the time

to me SuB makes sense-but dont take my spot

then again im just a pre-froshe whose only been there a grand total of 5 hours, so what do i know?

-out

o and yea im pretty sure that at least SuB is wireless, if not all

feel free to correct me if im wrong

-out

SueB is not yet wireless. You stand corrected :)

It will be wireless by the beginning of next year tho.

well thats the important thing isnt it?

I mean wireless in dorms isnt as big of a deal, you might just want it so that its wireless in quad that way you will have the increased mobility. Being connected to one ethernet cable will really not limit your activity in a room.

well you've never seen me do research for a paper, im all over the place : )
anybody know when the rest of the campus is going wireless?
