Dorms

Well, I am happy to say I have officially decided to come to UR :)

So, one thing I was wondering about is freshman girls dorms. Is there a spot on the housing application to indicate a preference? If so, could some current students give advice on which dorms are the best/worst (location, crampedness, etc)? I'm absolutely clueless!

Thanks so much.

I don't know which dorms are for the ladies these days, but Laura Robins (LoRo) is an all-freshmen, all-female dorm. While the rooms are a little smaller than some of the other dorms, all the girls that live there freshman year enjoy it. The way that it's blocked off, the girls that live in it really form a core group of friends with the girls in their section. It has a nice location (close to the WC Deanary, some of the academic buildings, post office and D-hall) and allows for you to meet a lot of girls quickly. Because it holds only freshmen ladies, it's also a good place to meet freshmen guys.

thanks for the info! after some SERIOUS searching on the UR website, I found that the first-year dorms are only Lara Robins and Moore.

Moore was my freshman year dorm before girls were on that side of the lake. The rooms there are a bit bigger than LoRo. It's also closer to the main academic quad and the gym. The way LoRo is blocked off, I think it makes for a closer knit group of residents though, becuase Moore is your standard long halled dorm. I think LoRo also had individual thermostats in the rooms, whereas Moore (at least when I was in there) did not.

I lived in LoRo my freshman year, and I really enjoyed it. Like Spiders05 said, because of the way it is designed (three separate blocks, A, B, and C, and then halls on each block based on the floor--A1, B2, C1, etc.) and the general encouragement for freshmen (girls, at any rate) to do things together, you form some really close friendships on your hall. My room was a double, the norm for LoRo I believe, and it was a good size. I think it was...10 by 13? I'm not entirely sure and I'm quite likely wrong, but you can see room measurements on the Richmond Housing site. It was adequate for two twin beds, not bunked, plus two dressers, two desks, a TV (on top of my dresser), a small refrigerator, little side tables in the form of cubes for each of us, etc. And the closets are a really nice size, and they're pretty deep.

LoRo rooms do have individual thermostats, which is FABULOUS. They also have windows with screens that you can open and close. The bathrooms were fine. I think it was...5 showers and three toilets and...four or five sinks for 28 girls, and there was never a problem. And they clean it daily, so no worries about the disgusting things you might find :P. I have to go, but let me know if you have specific questions!
