Hi question:

Which do you think is the best dorm in Penn? And are there any infamous ones? I need help for completing the housing app!!! Thanksss!

What kind of housing are you looking for?

Apartment style, there’s Harrison (FreshEx is a great residential program; I’m biased though, since I was in it my freshman year) and Harnwell. Downside to Harnwell is that it’s less social and can be harder to meet people.

Traditional dorms, there’s the Quad, Hill, and Kings Court/English House which are predominantly freshmen. Very social, easy to meet lots of people. Some (Hill, maybe KCEH?) don’t have AC, but Hill and KCEH have a dining hall right inside the building.

Do the dorms in the quad have co-ed or single sex floors?

Honestly if you’re still filling out the housing application at this point (i.e. you missed the May 1st deadline) then it won’t really matter because you won’t have many choices left.

some quad halls have coed bathrooms! woo

no but really they’re okay - just like family style - and implemented by request / preference

I’m an accepted transfer student and my choices are:
Du Bois, Fisher, Gregory, Harnell, Harrison, Hill, Kings-Court, Riepe, Rodin, Sansom, Stouffer, Ware

Where is a social place that will be easier to meet people in?

the freshman-dominated dorms would be easiest to meet others - pick hill, kings court, or fisher / riepe / ware

but as a transfer, you might want to be with upperclassmen in highrises (harnwell / harrison / rodin)

Is it likely that those who apply later for housing will probably not get a dorm since housing isnt guaranteed for juniors?

yes, quite likely to not get on-campus housing if you wait

whoops sorry i didn’t make it clear
i’m a transfer…

and whats the deal with the sansom place undergrad community???

stouffer seems really appealing in the brochure…

I think i want to live in a single room, and the most important thing im looking for in housing is the easiest place to socialize and make friends

sansom doesn’t have a particularly strong community in/of itself because it has a lot of international students (who tend to stick to themselves) and upperclassmen (who already have their social groups) - no freshmen live in sansom

a quad or stouffer single sounds like a good bet -

though as you’ll soon find out, lots of socializing is done in activities and not within the context of housing, so it doesn’t matter so tremendously where you live

If deadlines passed for a residential program I’m interested in, does this mean I’m completely screwed? I mean, I just found out I was accepted yesterday, so I did not really have any time to properly apply and write my essay.

im sorry, um… which are “the quad”?

joe:
which residential programs are u interested in?

Fisher Hassenfeld, Ware, and Riepe all form the quad. But they have a lot of freshmen, which could be a downside for you.

East Asia in Harnwell… I’m Chinese… not a fob though… fyi

If you want an overpriced apartment with a ****ty kitchen and cockroaches as an extra bonus, then I would warmly recommend Sansom.

how would you guys compare Penn’s dorms to the dorms of most other highly selective colleges?
