hi is it possible to do a double major at johns Hopkins in philosophy and biology? they’re in the same school of arts so I don’t see why not but is it a bad idea or possible? (I want to possibly go for med school or become a medical lawyer)
You definitely can, you just have to plan well. Your choice between a BA vs. BS in Bio might affect scheduling. “Students may major in philosophy or use it as a concentration for an area major in Humanistic Studies. They may also study philosophy along with another subject, either by constructing a double major or by taking courses designed to help them develop philosophical perspectives on their own fields of interest.”
This article might be good reading for you:
I don’t doubt that it’s possible. But if the purpose of the bio major is just as a vehicle for the pre-med requirements, and you have no interest in academic life sciences grad programs, then I’d question why a second major in biology vs. a minor or just completing the premed coursework. The second major won’t advantage you as a premed applicant; you might be better off spending the time on gaining relevant practical experiences. Philosophy is a fine premed or pre-law major as long as you meet the specific coursework requirements in addition. The answer to “why double-major” should be better than “because I can.” Look at other directions you may want to use that time to explore, such as bioethics, public policy, public health… only do a full-blown lab-science degree program if you truly want to.
