What double majors make sense?

Hi! I got accepted to the class of 2022 at Johns Hopkins and I’m planning on majoring in public health. Is it difficult to add a double major in biology or cell/mol bio with that? Or would it be easier to do a humanities focused additional major such as psychology or political science?

Thanks!

From what my friends have said, Public Health and Mol/Cell Bio are both pretty intensive majors. PH will require you to take advanced coursework at the Bloomberg School of Public Health as well as do 80 hours of some applied experience. MCB will require research credits, which may or may not be able to overlap with the PH applied experience.

If you did want to double major in a Bio-related major, I’d suggest the B.A. in Bio over the B.S. in MCB because I think the former does not require those extra research credits; the combo of PH/Bio might be difficult but ultimately it will be pretty close to the coursework someone who is Public Health and pre-med, plus some extra bio courses, so it should be doable. For humanities, I’d also suggest the relatively new Medicine, Science, and the Humanities major which could be a nice complement to your PH coursework with courses in Sociology, Anthropology, and Bioethics.

Why do you want to double major specifically? It would be a lot easier and a lot more fulfilling to pick one major and take electives in the other subjects you are interested in.
