Hi, so Im a student (junior in hs) looking to apply for the class of 2021! I know its still very early, but i was wondering if syracuse allows students to double major in different colleges? for example, newhouse and whitman? i want to major in poly sci and management, would this be allowed? would i have to reapply to say, whitman if i enter as a poly sci major and see if i get in? thanks!
Actually, the only way that you CAN double/dual major is if it’s in different colleges. Newhouse only allows you to receive either 30 or 33 credits from that school. The remaining 90 or so must come from other areas. I’d try to get in contact with an academic counselor from the school for a more thorough explanation. From my understanding, if you want to major in any college you have to be accepted. So you’d need to apply to both Newhouse and Whitman and be accepted in order to have majors in those schools.
jjohnross…My daughter is a rising junior and a dual at Whitman and Newhouse. She had applied as a dual major as her first choice as a high school senior. She recently added a minor which will not require any additional credits. The dual at Whitman and Newhouse requires a minimum of 151 credits (more depending upon one’s majors) but is very doable in 4 years with AP/IB/CLEP credits and some summer courses. Syracuse19 is right, in that if you want to major at a particular school at SU, you would need to be accepted into that school. You can be accepted prior to matriculating or apply to another or additional college once at SU. Newhouse goes strictly by GPA (often requiring a 3.5 and quite often higher depending upon the applicant pool) for internal transfers that complete 30 credits at SU. Whitman requires a 3.4 and completion of a few mandated courses as part of their 30 graded credits for internal transfers. Arts and Science requires a 3.0 for automatic internal transfer.
You would need to meet these requirements if you want to add a major and were not already in that school.
You may want to check with an admissions counselor because SU offers a lot of dual and double major options. It seems like a lot of the top SU students are taking two majors, a single major with two or three minors, etc… SU is a great place for those with multiple interests and encourages students to pursue their varied passions.
As a high school student, my daughter had not considered her program until her SU admissions counselor suggested it. She absolutely loves Cuse.
Goo luck with your college search and decision.
@funfatdaddy thanks for your help! The dual Whitman/Newhouse program seems like an amazing option for what I want to do, no school that Ive looked at so far has anything like it! Would you mind telling me your daughters stats for SU when applying, if you remember? My grades are above what they’re looking for (4.51 GPA, mostly honors and AP) I just need to get an ACT score to really look at all my options for applying. Does it help that Ive been a staff writer for the school newspaper all 3 years? I hear newhouse likes communications-related ec.
Im interested in public relations and business management, possibly finance (to please my parents – they thing bm and pr are “easy” majors with little job options) but im still a junior (c/o 2017) so i have time. I appreciate all your help!
Being a staff writer certainly helps, but Newhouse cares more about you wanting to receive an education from them than having a ton of experience. I got in and have no journalism experience whatsoever. Just make sure to make it clear in your essays how badly you want it.
@jjohnross…Not sure if my daughter’s stats will help as Syracuse is holistic in their admissions process. But here you go: 4.28 Weighted GPA with almost all honors and APs. Top 10%. Upward trajectory. 27 ACT. (30M/27E) Great ECs. Her teachers loved her. Some national awards. Applied ED. Newhouse can be a bit unpredictable. Students were accepted with much lower stats and much higher stats. My daughter has friends at SU who were accepted to Duke, UVA out of state, BU, etc. and were not accepted into Newhouse. Others were denied by similar schools, but accepted into Newhouse.
SU likes students that show interest. I would suggest a tour and interview if possible.
My daughter loves SU and is so glad she went ED. She had absolutely no regrets pulling her other applications the weekend she was accepted.
Lots of schools will offer a great education. One thing that stands out with SU is that they offer a lot of programs and opportunities to those students with varied and multiple interests. These types of students who know what they want seem to thrive at Cuse.
Good luck with your college search and decision.
