Double Major Business & Information Systems?

I will be entering CMU this fall as a Tepper admit. However, I do have some interest in the Information Systems program as well. Would it be possible to do a double major in both?

Can any current CMU student shed some light on this possibility and what the process would be like?

Thanks

IS seems to be becoming increasingly popular recently. At least for my year, there were more freshmen who enrolled than expected, making it very difficult for folks outside IS to double major in or transfer to IS, because there is simply no seat for them. So if you are sure about double majoring in IS, start early by talking to Carol Young, the IS advisor. The process includes an additional application to the IS program, in addition to the transfer application to DC. The former I believe can be found on the IS program website and the latter can be found ont the DC ACC website.

In addition, you may want to start taking the programming prerequisite sequence for IS in your first semester. IS requires 15110, 15112, 15121.

Edit: If I remembered correctly (I transferred out of IS last year so double check this coz it might have changed), IS is available as a primary major by admission only. That means no additional major in IS. You must transfer into the IS program as a primary major in order to do IS. You would have to apply to double major in business in your junior year in that case.

The Tepper undergrad program has an IT track which seems really similar to the IS major. Thus, you can study information systems as a Tepper student without having to change your major to IS. Transferring to IS is quite risky since its difficult to switch into Tepper (from what I’ve heard).

^ Note however the six professional core IS courses are offered by the IS program and are open only to IS students. You can take plenty of biz classes under Content Area requirement of IS, which is what some IS majors do.
