My daughter is accepted to Comm as a Theatre major. She would like to double major with Medill (public relations, perhaps). Does anyone know policy to double major? Must she apply to Medill? Can she do this as a freshman? Is it do-able with a Theatre major?

That particular double major may be tricky, as I think both Theatre and Medill are “closed” schools (i.e. require a separate admissions process as an incoming freshman).

When/if you attend Wildcat Days you could investigate which second majors your D could do as a Theatre Major, but I do think there are a few that are trickier and Medill may be among them. D has so far found that the “One Northwestern” philosophy has given her VERY broad access to the various schools and that even most “rules” about curriculum are negotiable, but there may be limits so I’d ask questions (you can also call before Wildcat Days).

I hope someone else chimes in, since as far as I know D hasn’t tried to register for any classes through Medill. It may be that you can do it, but just don’t have as high a registration priority as Medill students but I’m not sure.

With Medill as the base college it’s common to pursue a second major or minor in Weinberg and selectively in other NU schools (> 2/3 of kids in Medill do so). But with Comm as your base college, one can’t 2nd major in Journalism (though you certainly can still take many courses in Medill for credit).

What is available is the Integrated Marketing Communications Certificate Program which overlaps marketing and PR. It’s a great add-on to anyone interested in the fields. Kids from every NU college can participate. IMC in Medill (as with Marketing at Kellogg) is arguably the best reputed program of its kind internationally. Great resume booster come grad time.

In case the reverse situation is of interest to some (i.e. You are admitted to Medill and wish to double in Theatre), I think Bala’s statement can be re-phrased…

I assume the same is true for Music or any other “closed” schools on campus.

Unlike IMC, I think the Music Theatre Certificate Program is only open for audition by Theatre and Music majors so someone from Medill could not apply for that.

skewlcounselor - if you’ve already been admitted (which I believe is the case) you should just call the school and ask them. They would have the best, most complete answer for you.

Thank you everyone for your input. Bala, I am especially encouraged that IMC would be an option without admittance to Medill. I will have my D call the school, but I am kinda waiting on the FA package because I don’t want to get her too invested until we can confirm that it is a viable option for our family. NU is very definitely her #1 school, but we got a couple of financial aid packages today that were quite appealing. (Well, appealing to her parents, any way!) ;-)
