It’s official I will be attending DePaul for acting this fall and I’m super excited. However my family is really big on pursuit off a double major. I too agree that this would be a good. Not that I don’t LOVE this thing called theatre, but I want to be prepared. At the admitted students events this past weekend one of the alumni that spoke to us spoke extensively about her experience attending DePaul as both a psychology and acting major. Taking 32 credits her first semester.
No, I’m not exaggerating and neither was she as the head of admissions confirmed it himself after the gasp of the crowd.
I guess my question is do any of you parents or current undergrads have any insight on this area of discussion? I know it will be difficult as this is a conservatory rather than a small liberal arts program. However, I should note I am a transfer student and all of my general studies classes are complete with the exception of math (shudder). I’ve seen that there are a few threads about this topic but they all seem dated and I wanted a fresh prospective. Thank you ahead of time for any who offer any knowledge!
No one takes 32 credits in a semester. Most schools require you to get special permission (and pay extra) to take anything over 18.
One problem you might have is that certain majors are in other colleges that have other requirements. If your theater major is in the college of fine arts, there might be different requirements than the college of business (foreign language, humanities, other core classes) and it is hard to fit them all in.
You really need to talk to someone at DePaul about the specific other major and scheduling and how feasible it will be. I think it will be difficult, but your experience this weekend suggests that it is possible in at least some cases. It will definitely help that you have transfer credits. Good luck.
That’s what we all thought @twoinanddone but the head guy did confirm. We were all jaw dropped too. Thank you @Jkellynh17 I will definitely call today.
Some schools count credits differently. That is the only way anyone would be able to take 32 credits in one semester.
Don’t forget to factor in the time spent on shows. If cast you may have practice every night and on some weekends. Gotta have time for homework. You may need to have a job as well. I think it would be a great experience to get involved in a dramatic arts organization. Maybe DePaul offers funding for independent student productions. If you were involved in the creation of a production from the planning stages through performance this would add a real-world skill set for you. Many theatre students realize that upon graduation that at some point they will be collaborating with others to create their own art. Gaining experience during college in all aspects of theatrical production will probably open more doors for you. My D is a dramatic arts student at another college. She has friends that squeeze in a minor and manage to graduate in 4 years but my daughter is not doing the minor so she can participate in plays and musicals. She is getting involved with a Dramatic Arts group. She is building her resume while getting a degree. It all depends on what YOU want to do though, what you and your family think are important. Colleges usually have information about what classes are required to complete a major or a minor You can chart out classes for the major or minor and see if you think it will work for you. Speak to a school counselor and see if your plan feasible. It may take a little longer but if that’s what is important you you then go for it!
Another thing to consider is how will your pursuit of a double major be viewed by the Theatre faculty. Will they think you are not as committed to being a professional actor as your classmates? The program my son is going into has rules about what you can do outside of the BFA Acting program and the department has to approve it. There is an expectation that you will eat, drink, sleep & breathe theatre while you are enrolled in their program.
