Hi,

I am currently an undergraduate student at a community college in California. I am working towards transferring as an applied mathematics major, but I have a strong desire to learn more about the field of journalism. I love writing and I have always thought about being a journalism major. However, I am worried because I have read that there are no jobs for journalism majors.

I am still not really sure what I want to do for a career. Anything that lets me travel is my real goal, but I am not sure what that career is with a math degree.

Would it be helpful to pair up math with journalism or would it be pointless? Any advice would be appreciated! I am planning on taking a journalism this fall.

Thanks,
Amy

Have you thought about being an actuary? It’s a great field from what I’ve read. Very low unemployment rate and not too much stress. My son is an applied math major, and that’s what he’s aiming for. You can begin taking the exams to become an actuary before you get out of college, too. That’s what he’s studying for this summer.

If I were you, I would concentrate on math classes. My son is adding a few business classes that should help him with his goals.

Good luck!

I wonder if that double major would help you in getting journalism assignments to cover more tech related fields. Does anyone know?

Since you asked about careers for math majors, here is a link for you.

As for adding journalism to the mix, I think it is a great idea. Writing and communicating is a very important skill to possess and you will distinguish yourself from the other technical and math majors.
