Double major in Mechanical Engineering and Economics?

I am interested in obtaining a BS in Mechanical Engineering a Economics at the University of Houston.
Currently i am a second year student and will be starting the engineering curriculum in Fall 2010. So, it will probably take me approximately 3 more years (total of 5 years, including the 2 years already done) to complete the program. Now, i am also interested in adding a second major (Economics). I have already fulfilled majority of the requirements to get a minor, but i really enjoy economics, so i am thinking about double majoring in Econ and MECE.
I guess my ultimate question is- Is it worth double majoring in Economics and Mechanical engineering?
To help you answer the question, please consider the time it may take and future opportunities.

Any great opinion would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I think it would be an interseting and doable combination, but I would have to ask myself, “why?” If you want to go into engineering and just enjoy the economics than I think it will help. However, if you want to go into business or finance I almost see no point to do both. In some cases only the engineering will matter. I guess, it all comes down to what you want to do when you graduate.

Also, have you considered Industrial Engineering?

Essentially, i want to go into management consulting. And later down the road, look into getting an MBA.
I have considered Industrial Engineering, but the problem with IE is that it’s not focused. In other words, it’s almost like a business degree with a great amount of emphasis on mathematics.
