Greetings to all,
I’m currently a san diego community college student planning on transferring (hopefully) to either UCSD or UCI. I’m using the GI Bill, and I’ve hit kind of a wall. I finished the majority of GE credits while I was still in the service, so now I’m struggling finding enough classes to participate full time to get my full allowance for housing. I’ve always thought about doing a double major ( and it would solve that problem), but how does that work when transferring? Will that fly on an education plan? I’d go to my counselor, but I probably won’t be able to see them for a while due to the high volume of work they have currently (fall semester is starting).
I think once you’re accepted to your potential transfer school. You can talk to your advisor and tell him, “I’m interested in double majoring, what should I do?” Some departments like Meteorology and Math have like an agreement of what courses you should take.
You don’t request a double major until after you get to a UC. Be aware that you usually cannot pick a double major that is impacted (selective). If you know what major you like and determine that it appears doable, you can prepare by taking the major pre-reqs at the CCC. You would still apply to one major, but when you get to the UC, you’re more or less ready to jump on the second.
Agree with all of the above. Essentially what you can do in the meantime, like @lindyk8 said, is meet the prerequisites of a desired (and non-impacted) second major so that they will have less reason to deny your petition for a double major once you get to a UC.
Also depending on your desired field, there are other non-UC required classes that can help you in the future such as meeting your profession certification requirements (Accounting / Finance / Business / etc.) or educational development units (Premed / Pharmacology / Nursing / Kinesiology / etc.)
