QUESTION about double major!!!

How does double major work? i am little confused....
i heard it's different from having a major and a minor.
If I do double major do i have to finish both of major's upper divison or some of it?(half and half)

i believe all =)

Double major means exactly what it sounds like-- you would have to finish all the requirements for both majors and you would essentially get a degree for each major you complete.

Do I have to petition to do double major? I heard if i do double major the unit cap goes higher also. is there any major that i cant not do double major in?

i believe you have to take all the required lower divisions. I am thinking of double majoring but it requires too many classes that I rpobably will not be able to finish within two years or under the unit cap. By that time, I will be forced to graduate or get kicked out of w/e uc i will be transferring to this fall.

Can they kick you out? I thought you could stay and take as long as you needed to finish whateer major(s) you're pursuing.

yeah i thought that too duogmeg, keep us updated

I'm not sure what school you are planning to attend, but I can only speak for Berkeley. The L&S department will only raise your unit cap from 130 to 136 for double majors. Essentially, you need to plan really carefully, take a full load each semester, and finish as many prereqs as possible before you transfer. It's possible, but unfortunately its difficult for transfers since we have less time to get these things done.

From what I've heard, they won't directly kick you out if you go over the cap, but they will begin putting pressure on you to finish. There's a good chance you will lose your financial aid and they might put a hold on your registration unless you file a petition. Of course, if you are willing to go through the bureaucracy and argue your case you might be able to avoid sanctions. But, you'd be better off just planning well than having to deal with that.

UCLA - you must complete your double major within 216 units or two years(there is no unit cap if you can do it in two years, they will approve any overage you have) However, you can with prior approval go over the 216 units. This is for college of L&S. You are allowed to overlap 2 upper division courses only. You can not double major within the same department. You must complete all lower division requirements and 2 upper division courses from EACH major prior to petitioning for a double major- you must work out a plan and show that you can complete it within reasonable time ( you do this with a counselor)

If you are accepted to a non-impacted major and the major you want to double major with is impacted you will MOST likely not be allowed to add that major. You have to be accepted into the impacted departments major and then double major with the non impacted major. Clearly it is possible to double major with the impacted major if you get department approval, but that is difficult to do.

Example, you want to major in Sociology (non impacted) and BizEcon (impacted)- you would have to have been accepted into BizEcon in order to pursue this double major, if you were accepted into the Sociology department the Economics department will in most cases not accept you.

A double major requires you to complete all requirements for both majors with the allowable of 2 overlapping.
A Dual/ join major is one that the school would already have as an official major and that would be the type that you do 1/2 in each major- for example the Math/Econ major is a Dual/Joint program, 1/2 math and 1/2 econ.

what is the unit cap for UCLA and UCB with out double major?(just single major)

For Berkeley L&S, the unit cap is 130

i thought it was 138 for Cal? it's 130???!!! link please!
