How much better would it be to double major with economics and math vs major in economics and minor in math? I am looking to go to grad school in finance most likely to pursue a finance career, and I know math is critical there, but is the minor enough background knowledge? Would the double major increase my chances of getting into grad school? I don't know if I can graduate on time with a double major though.

A double major would set you apart, but I don’t think it would help. The qualifications for a MS in Finance is A degree. I have never heard about preferential treatment being given to someone because of either a minor or a dual undergrad major, for both grad school or job placement.

I could be wrong.

I would think that a good background in math is essential to go for a masters in finance, I wouldn’t think a minor is sufficient, or considered in the admissions process is it? I don’t have anything that really sticks out though to separate me from other possible ms candidates.

I wouldn’t think you’d need something to stand out so much, MS Finance is not as selective as MBA.

A solid math background is indeed needed, but a minor? I don’t have a minor in math and I have a solid math background; engineering degree.

I don’t have a good gpa, it is slightly below 3.0 but I could still bring it up, and I’m looking to get a MS Finance right after school, so I won’t have work experience either. Any good graduate schools will be very selective no matter which program especially for students right out of undergrad, isn’t it?
