Double Major Worthwhile?

I am currently going into my 3rd year of undergrad. majoring in biotechnology. I’ve kept up a 4.0 gpa so far (finished all of my gen. requirements including biochem, o. chem and genetics) and am sitting at 70 credit hours. I have finished every pre-req. for pre-med, but have since decided that this would be too much of a commitment. As a result I wish to pursue a career in business or consulting. At the moment I am interning this summer for Monsanto Corn research and really enjoy the business side. I have a friend that attends Johns Hopkins university as a BME/economics double major who is interning at the consultant firm Deloitte.

Long story short (sorry, this is long enough already), I was curious to know if it would be worth tacking on an economics or speech communications major to help increase my marketability to potential employers. I have done some research and while it is subjective, the consensus is that a double major is usually a waste of time. In my case specifically, would double majoring be worth my time to bolster my resume for prospective employers? Thanks for any advice, it is much appreciated.

If you enjoy the subject and believe it will help you sell yourself to employers all while still being able to graduate on time, you should definitely double major. If any of those conditions are not met, you have to think whether it is worth or not to add on another major! Good luck and you have a very impressive academic record it seems so you’ll be successful no matter what you decide!

You seem to already be pretty marketable given the internships you’ve been able to get. You might be interested in taking a few classes in economics or business or public speaking, but you certainly don’t need a double major.

I agree with above. Also instead of getting that double major you can always get an MBA down the road that will hep in the business area. Many industries I work with like to see MBA’s with different background than business. What do you have left to take on your current path?
