do you think it’s possible to double major at ucsd? I applied for business psych but I also want to major in econ. will i have to take classes during the summer? will it be worth to waste summers on classes rather than an internship? I could also switch my major to econ???
anyone??
I would ask all your questions once you are accepted and attend orientation. Your academic advisor can help you plan out your schedule and see if it is possible. Econ is a capped major so if you are an in-coming Freshman and did not apply as an Econ major, below is what is required to declare that major:
- Meet and complete these two criteria BEFORE your seventh quarter. Students cannot be enrolled in the screening criteria courses in their seventh quarter. When counting quarters, only count Fall, Winter and Spring quarters and DO NOT count summer sessions.
2.5 grade average across Econ 1 and Econ 3
2.0 grade average across Math 20ABC (or 2.7 grade average across Math 10ABC)
2) Apply NO LATER than your seventh quarter. When counting quarters, only count Fall, Winter and Spring quarters and DO NOT count summer sessions.
- Use the Capped Major Application tool to apply. Do NOT use the TritonLink Major/Minor tool to request a change of major.
NOTE: There is no summer application period. Applications are accepted in Fall, Winter and Spring quarters. See below for quarterly application deadlines.
Application Process
Applications will be reviewed after the application cycle closes. Once all applications have been reviewed, applicants will be notified of the outcome via the Virtual Advising Center (VAC). If approved to enter the Department, you will be notified of how to change your major.
Students are expected to be aware of the below timelines and deadlines, and to check their @ucsd.edu email account regularly. If approved to enter the Department, failure to take action by the specified date and time will result in a rescinded approval/offer to enter a major in the Department of Economics.
i wanted to know so i can plan the best college for me before i enroll in a particular school
You cannot declare a double major until your admitted to any college so you are doing the right thing by doing some research now. UCSD is a demanding and competitive school and with Econ being a capped major, it might not be an option to do a double major. Unless most of your Business Psych classes overlap with the Econ classes, you will most likely have to take classes over the summer and it could also add additional quarters to your 4 year graduating plan.
Here is the 4 year Bus Psych plan and the Econ plan so you can try to determine if it is feasible. These plans do not include your required GE’s and pre-req courses:

Again, no one can give you a specific answer unless you sit down with an actual academic advisor and plan out a schedule.

Looking at the classes needed to receive a degree in Psych and Economics, which is way less that most majors, I would say it is doable in 4 years without summer session. However, this also depends on how many AP credits you have that would exempt you from classes or the college you are admitted to at UCSD (some colleges have heavier GEs than others).
ok thank you
