I am entering Cal in the fall, and I was initially planning on majoring in English. However, I've been researching the Media Studies major, something I'm extremely interested in, and it seems like a great major for me as well. How difficult is it to double major (English/Media Studies) at Berkeley, or in general? I really would love to be able to do it, and I really love both subjects, but I'm really worried that it will leave me sleepless and overwhelmed. I plan on talking to counselors/advisors when I'm there, but I just wanted to get a more personal perspective from someone.

in letters and science, double majoring is incredibly easy. Most majors only require 8 upper division classes, and you’ll be taking 3-5 upper division courses per semester during your junior and senior years.

As long as you know from the get go what you want to double major in, you can almost always do it within 4 years.

My double major in Mandarin and Japanese was by no means ‘incredibly easy’ ;)

But in general double majoring isn’t too difficult as long as you plan everything out from the beginning, definitely.

^EALC allows in-house double majors? I thought two majors from one department was never allowed

That’s reassuring… but would it be incredibly difficult to do a semester abroad?

Perhaps Cal’s policies have changed in recent years, I am not too certain. Back in the ye olden days of my undergraduate studies it was allowed.

One semester abroad shouldn’t make life too terribly difficult for you. More difficult? Yes. But definitely worth the challenge for the experience and joys of studying outside the country for a few months. As long as you’re motivated and disciplined I don’t think it’ll give you any gray hairs.
