I really want to major in Computer Science however I already applied as an econ major at berkeley. Is it possible to double major once you have transferred? Are we required to graduate in 2 years?

No, you don't have to graduate within 2yrs but I heard it is 3yrs..

For Berkeley, the school will want you to graduate in 2 years. If if go beyond that, the school will let you KNOW that they do not want you there through various action, i.e. significantly cutting down your financial aid, losing priority in registration, etc.

seriously? wow that sux.... but can you still double major though?

what about ucla?business econ and double major in com sci and minor in accounting?.....

For Berkeley, you can take extra semesters as long as you don't go over the unit cap. I believe the cap is 130 for single majors and 136 for double, so you get just a little more leeway. As long as you are even 1 unit under the cap at the end of your fourth semester, you can take another one. Many people do this and have no problem. Also, some majors have a few overlapping classes and you can use a couple of these to fulfill requirements for both majors. It is possible to double major and finish in time as long as you plan carefully.

i see,,,,,,,,,,,

You gotto get into EECS first don't you

130units is maximum?! That's so litttle....
I know they accept total 70units from CC....
so total amount of unit you could take at Berkeley is 60units?! That sux@!!!

so basically if u cant finish double major in 2 years or if you are over the maximum u must be out?

They won't force you out, but it will be like dhl3 said- no financial aid and loss of priority registration.

To clarify what I was saying about the unit cap-- if you are a double major and finish your fourth (or even your fifth) semester with 135.5 units, you will still be able to take another full semester of units. As long as you finish the semester below the unit cap, you can take another semester.

On a side note, I was really worried about finishing on time since Berkeley did not take any of my major prereq classes for transfer. I later realized that it is easier than you think-- as long as you plan carefully.

For UCLA, the unit cap is around 217 quarter units (give or take 1 or 2 units), I'm not sure of the exact number though.
You can't go over this, whether you are double majoring or not. I know people who tried to double major but couldn't do it because of one course (had 216 units with one 4 unit class to finish).
So make sure you put that into consideration.

That sounds like a lot more, but I think thats because UCLA is on the quarter system. To keep it in perspective, how many units is a person expected to take per quarter?

3 for people who are heavily involved in campus activities (leadership position, part time job, etc.)
4 for normal people
5 for crazy over-achievers

*assume each course is worth 4 units.

double majoring is gonna be tough... yet i dont wanna lose the opportunity of doing it........ i really wanna take accounting classes too at berkeley alongside majoring in econ and comp sci... so many things so little time i guess... and little money

screw double major.... one is hard enough..

I think if you double in related majors, or even two social science majors it'd be fine. But a science and another major that isn't related is much too difficult coming from a CC

You can double major if you complete all of your preqs at CC for both majors. Usually that would mean you would have to take a unit loss. For UCLA, you CAN go over the unit max of 216, as long as you finish on time. I worked with a guy who was double majoring in Anthro and Poli w/minor in south american studies at ucla, he graduated with 247 units but within 4 years including the summer after year 4. He attended every summer and sometimes took 18 units in the summer.

Even when we had our orientation at UCLA, the dean said, we do not care how many units you take as long as you are here for 2 years, they will override any max as long as you finish in 2 years. If you can manage to quadruple major in that time, they are ok with it. Its when you want to go over the unit max and stay much longer that they do not like it.

To double major at ucla in comp sci and econ, you would have had to be accepted to the engineering school first not to college of letters and sciences.

Berkeley also will allow two years with no limitations. The caps do not kick in until you go over this time span. Essentially, you will be facing similar limitations no matter which school you pick.
