Hi everyone I’m a recent admit and scholarship finalist to washu. I want to eventually go to law school and I’m having a hard time combining what I want to do with what will help me get my LSAT. I really wouldn’t mind double majoring in accounting and philosophy (law and policy track), or accounting and political science but I just wanted to know how possible this is. I really want to be done in 4 years. Thanks for all your answers!!!
It’s good to decide this as early as possible because you’ll have to do some extra maneuvering to fit in a double major across schools. Would your primary major be in Arts and Sciences or in the business school? If it’s in the business school, you’ll have less flexibility because there are a number of required courses for the BSBA. It’s definitely doable to have a second major in Art Sci, but you wouldn’t have as much of opportunity to take elective courses outside of your majors. That said, there are a lot of people at Wash U with two majors. It’s a lot easier for an Art Sci student because there are fewer general requirements, but it’s possible for a business student too.
You would need 60 units in Olin + 27 units for the philosophy major (or 30 for political science) + 3 units for Writing 1 + 6 units for Calculus, leaving you with approximately 7-8 classes, but some of those would need to go toward general education requirements.
If you want more flexibility, you could consider minoring instead of double majoring because you would have the opportunity to explore more areas and still do coursework that will help prepare you for the future. You can take some logic classes to help you with the LSAT, but as far as the critical analysis skills that will help you on the LSAT, you can take any classes that require a lot of reading, writing and critical thinking (Philosophy, History, English Literature are some examples of types of classes that could be helpful). You can get a good mix of skills without having two majors.
Thank you so much @sungoose ! I was waiting for a response like this.
Thanks for posting this question here. I have a similar question. Can the student double/minor Art Design major and Computer Science major at Wash U? Thanks.
@elcollege It wouldn’t be possible to double major in Communication Design in Sam Fox and Computer Science in the engineering school. The requirements for the BFA include 65 units of art school classes, 48 credits in the College of Arts and Sciences and 15 units electives, so while it is very possible to get a minor in another school as an art student, it’s really only possible to get a second major in Art Sci. Since the Computer Science minor is only 15 credits and Sam Fox students can choose to take those 15 elective credits in any school, it wouldn’t be too difficult to complete the minor.
