Double Majoring?

I'm thinking of double majoring in Business and Computer Science. I've heard that this is pretty popular but those people really don't have a life and study all day. Is that true? Is it really that hard to do this? I don't want to be a studyholic that studies all day everyday and have no college life, but I'm not the social enthusiast that parties and all that so I don't mind giving up time to study heavily. If I do decide to do this, I will try to maximize my AP credits to take out as much credit requirements so I don't have to do summer school or something. Does anyone hear anything or know anything about this? Any opinions are highly appreciated!

A double major is hardly ever a good idea if it takes you an additional year of college (and expense). If you want to stay that extra year, see if there is a 5-year co-terminal degree at your university where in 5 years you get a Masters along with your B.S… That is usually more valuable in improving starting salary.

why do you want to double major? i have met someone at unc who’s double majoring in cs and business. if you choose to double major, you’re going to have to do the b.a. in computer science instead of the b.s. which is more valuable to employers (depending on what field you go into). you should consider doing the entrepreneurship minor at unc instead. they have some really great opportunities and they bring in amazing speakers/real life entrepreneurs. (unceminor.org) I am a b.s. computer science major with minors in entrepreneurship + arabic and so far it has been manageable. i know many business majors and the classes are not very difficult once you’re accepted (it’s competitive). you also have to apply to be in the entrepreneurship minor.

One of my teachers who graduated from UNC double majored, and had a minor, so I would guess that you’re not overwhelmed if she managed to to that in four years.

I fully expect to graduate with a double major in 4 years (one being a BSBA). I did exactly what you suggested and optimized my APs for 35 BE credits. The only catch is that UNC limits how many AP credits can count toward core classes for your major. For me that wasn’t a problem, but, check that out given your specific situation. I have plenty of time to have a normal college experience. I NEVER miss a home football or basketball game, play lots of intramural sports and still have time for other activities. You simply need to get good with your time management. Very possible to do…

Our son just graduated from UNC in May with a double major in Journalism and Political Science and a minor in Business. He did a junior spring semester abroad, and still graduated in 4 years. It is very doable if you max your AP credits and plan ahead as best you can. He also had a great time while he was in Chapel Hill. He is a huge sports fan, so definitely went to cheer on the football and basketball teams. He was in a fraternity, worked part-time, and was on the staff of the student newspaper. I think organization is truly the key to double majoring!

HI Irishforever, did your son do any internships? Have a job after graduating? Just wonderding about opportunities for Journalism majors these days?

Hi Kdelaney! Good questions! As to the internships…yes! He got an internship as a summer sports intern for a paper in NC…well-respected and he really liked the people. He was working with some great sportswriters, with whom he is still in contact. He had a byline nearly every day, so the experience was terrific. They offered him the same internship for the next summer, but by the end of that first summer he had decided that he probably did not want to do that long-term. It’s actually a great thing to find it out before junior year! A little late to switch majors, and he absolutely finished both his journalism and poly sci majors, but began to focus more of his attention on his business minor, and build a resume for that. He went to a business university abroad during his spring semester junior year. Then he landed an internship that summer with a large consulting firm. He really enjoyed that, so got very proactive and sought out an internship with a start-up in Chapel Hill during his senior year. After applying and interviewing at several places, he landed a great job by March, for a different large consulting company! He is very happy there. We are really proud of his hard work and the proactive approach he took. But he also had a great time at Carolina…loved his fraternity, the sports, Franklin St., etc. It was a great school for him!! Good luck…it is such a challenge now, and he knows he is one of the lucky ones!

Hey! I go to UNC and I can say that most people I meet are double majoring. It’s extremely common and totally doable. However, UNC has an 8 semester limit, so you must complete your degree 4 years. Also there are limits to how much AP credit you can apply to your major. I believe it’s a maximum of 8 hours for your major, so around 2-3 classes, really. Don’t count on using your AP credit too much. Good luck and let me know if you have questions!
