Hi! I was wondering about the prevalence/ability to double major at Bryn Mawr, because although I’m not sure if I want to do it I am possibly interested. Also, I’d like to know the prevalence/ability to take more than the standard 4 classes a semester. Not to start, obviously, but maybe taking 5 later on. I’ve asked a few people and gotten very different responses based on who they knew.
Hey, I’m a 2013 grad, and to answer your question, it all kinda depends on what exactly you want to study, and how you work. Basically, all classes are intended to require a significant time commitment outside of class (limiting how many you can take), but some types of coursework may be easier for you than it is for others (and visa versa).
If you really want to achieve something at Bryn Mawr, and are willing/able to put in the effort, the school (faculty, staff, classmates, etc.) will do amazing things to help you succeed. But if you choose 2 majors that have little to no overlap, and also don’t cover all of your gen. ed. requirements, you might end up extremely overworked.
If I look back on the schedules of me and my friends, not many did double majors, but I did know a few people who did, and everyone definitely tried out a 5 course semester at least once. Most people will take 5 for up to the first 3 weeks of each semester during which time you can drop the 5th course no questions asked. The only people who were really successful at piling on course work though had planned ahead (especially for a double major), came into college with already strong studying techniques, and had very good self discipline/time management skills.
What exactly are you interested in studying?
