How difficult is it to double major in music and communications at NU? Has it been done before? I would like to double major in the BM in Music Studies of General Academic Studies along with Radio/TV/Film in the School of Communications. I would appreciate any feedback on the BM in Music Studies of General Academic Studies program.

What is the quality of voice teachers at NU? Who are the best teachers? What are your overall opinions of the Music School at NU?

I have answered this question so many times (please look at my thread under the old link or scan my posts about the possibility of double-majoring). Double-majoring is becoming more popular although most students still graduate with just a major (a minor is only optional). About 20% of the student population graduates with a double major. I don't know much about the Music/Communications program as Northwestern currently only have a 5-Year Degree Program with Weinberg, Engineering and Music. I'm sure it is possible, but it will take 5 years to actually do the Music/Communications program. I would ask the admission counselors at the School of Music and School of Communications and see what kind of arrangements they can do for you. It is possible, but only if you ask the right questions, you will be sure what to expect.

Whether you can get the correct answer depends if the admission person really knows much about NU's policy of granting two majors from two different schools. I'd say you may also want to talk to the deans/associate deans of the schools you are interested in.

Double-majoring was very popular for some reason among the students from Hong Kong when I was there (I am from there too). Almost everyone of us did it. The favorite double among us was industrial engineering + econ. But one of us, if I remember correctly, did double-major in econ and social policy (which I think is in school of ed). So that's a double between school of ed and school of art sci even though there's not an official 5-yr program between them. I think music+engg is a harder combo than music+communication, so it seems to me what you want is very possible.
