Double Majors

I was thinking about double majoring in physics and computer science,,,

anyone else out there thinking about doublem majoring or any current students double majoring that can tell me the advantages or disadvantages of doing so?

Also since i only have a few AP course would this mean taking summer classes to finish in 4 years?

http://www.cmu.edu/esg-cat/ has the catalog; look at it to decide if you can fit everything into your course schedule. The advantage would be that you get to learn about two subjects you're interested in, disadvantage would be that it means you won't have much of a chance to take other, random classes you might be interested in. I think it would be fairly easy to get a minor in one and major in the other.

lots of interesting course..hmm... i think im really confused... how will i know if i can fit all that into my schedule.

And its possible to get 2 majors not just a major and a minor right?

Yes, of course. If you talk to my old advisor she had a story where this kid was able to get like 3 majors or something plus a grad degree in just 4 years.

yay! I am hoping to do so. I e-mailed the admissions office (probably a student-lackey who doesnt know) but I was told the multiple majors are allowed. I beleive you have to apply and be accepted to whatever school. I hear that CMU is very helpful with multiple majors as far as distribution requirements.... good luck!

You don't have to apply for double majors. You just need to have a 2.0 or so (even this is negotiable because you just meet with your advisor and convince her you can do it) and then you fill out the forms and viola!

Oh and yes, CMU heavily encourages double majors, minors, and dipping into other schools/majors/fields.

yay! so...even if i wanted a CS and a creative writing major, I only have to apply to one of the schools...? somewhat confused
thank you, by the way

You are already in your primary major. You declare that by writing a form anytime from sophomore to junior year. Then if you want double major, you just fill out the application for that double major (junior year usually) and if you meet the basic requirements (like not being on suspension or probation) you will have that double major added.

It is really not that complicated :)

yay! thats fantastic!! So which school should I apply to then?

Whatever you are interested in? lol I don't know how to answer that question.

oh! well I mean either HSS or SCS

SCS 2. HSS

However it is easier to have a primary HSS and secondary SCS. Still keep SCS as #1 because you can always transfer from SCS to other schools.

okay! thank you very much! (does anyone ever apply to more than one school? Is the application the same? Is there an extra fee? Is applying to more than one a good idea?)

Many apply to more than one school. Check out the acceptance thread. The application is the same you basically just check one more box and list another college on the application. It'll all make sense once you SEE the application. There is no extra fee. Yes, applying to more than one school is a VERY good idea.

Good luck :)

you are very helpful, thank you so much!

ok so let me get this straight

I can still double major in CS and physics... even though i only got into MCS?

Also does your secondary major carry as much weight as if it was primary?

Yes.
Yes.
What is so hard to believe about this?

and what about the extra money if i want to double major in CS with ECE as my primary major....

can i major in both computer science and business? how hard do you think it will be? can it be done in 4 years? btw, i dont want to be one of those who are locked in their room 24x7.....

why not go for the 3+2 MBA prog sachit?
