does anybody know how to set up a double major with NU??

You just go to the department and talk to the advisor there about how the process works. Sometimes you will have to take a particular class or something before you can declare, other times it is just a matter of paperwork.

can you double major across schools?

Yes! I knew quite a few did econ + engineering.

MTGoddess: yes, but not always. I know you can't do Medill-Comm, or SESP-Comm, and there's probably others.

you can double easily, but one has to be in cas. cas is the central school where all of the special school branch off, and you cant double major in two of the small schools branched off or cas. that is how it was explained when i was there.

of course, im sure 2 majors in one school is perfectly fine.

^^ so one has to be in CAS to do a double across the different schools? can i do a double in engine+ econs if i got accepted to Mccormick instead?

Ok, so can i double major in Social Policy from SESP (the school i was admitted to) and IR from CAS?

it's semi-important, bc if i for sure cant, then i might end up at Tufts

Yes, you can definitely double major between SESP and WCAS.

is there such a thing as a "minor" at NU? Could one minor in a foreign language, for example, or have a concentration in a foreign language?

Yep, minors exist as well, usually with only 6-8 classes to take to complete it. You can also often minor in things that don't allow for double majors (I am in SESP, so I can't double major with Comm, but I am minoring in Film/Media studies which is housed in Comm). You can definitely minor in a foreign language. You can NOT double minor.

can i double major in some kind of journalism (at Medill) and linguistics at CAS?

I believe so. In fact, I think many Medill students have second major since they have to take almost 3/4 of their classes outside journalism.

FYI olam, you need to be IN Medill to double major with it. You probably know this, but just making sure. You always have to be in the non-WCAS school to double major across schools with WCAS.

so i applied and was accepted to WCAS for mathematics... i want to double major in mathematics and computer science... computer science is in mccormick... what action should i take?

thanks for your comments, Sam Lee and dfleish. And yes, I know I have to be in at Medill (that's where I applied and was accepted).

actually, I'm a double major MEAS/Comm.. the Comm major is actually an adjunct major, so it's only 10 credits.

so wait, you can't have more than one minor? is that really true?

This is kind of dissapointing to find out that, since I'm in CAS, i can only double major within CAS. Are there any ways around it?

Yes- transfer into the school you are serious about double majoring in. I mean, this makes perfect sense, since the other schools are so much more specialized. And as long as the 2nd major isn't journalism, you shouldn't have much trouble transferring.

And that's right, no double minors. This also makes sense because minors are not very hard to complete, and they give access to departments for things like pre-registration. Everyone would triple-minor or whatever and it would become silly and meaningless. Instead, one minor shows dedication and commitment to whatever field the minor is in. At least that's how I see it.
