Does anyone play oboe or bassoon? Do you have any tips on playing, breath support, reeds, etc. I have a ton of trouble playing the higher notes, like High A and above. Still, I love oboe :) I feel like there aren't enough, haha.

Bump! Anyone?

I guess really no one on CC plays oboe >.<

This is a post over a full year ago, but I’ll reply anyway.

I play the oboe, and according to my teacher, I have to have faster air when playing high notes. Try to imagine the difference between those big straws and a normal straw, and the normal straw would kind of be the feeling when playing high notes. But then again, there are also different fingerings to make a high note sharper/flatter, but it’s best to learn to support and control the amount and speed of air.

As for reeds, when I switched teachers, I switched from American to European reeds. I didn’t know there was a difference before, but American reeds are shorter, so the sound waves are moving faster, so it may not create a full sound like European reeds. Then again, this depends on the person and maybe on the teacher.

Sometimes my teacher would say use support, but I didn’t really know what it meant. It’s all about developing the diaphragm muscle, and using that when playing high notes is helpful as well. You kind of tighten it when you play, but it’s kind of hard to describe. Another thing to develop (for playing longer, changing the tuning as you play etc.), is your cheek/lip muscles.

That’s all the tips I can think of so far, and it’s been awhile since your first post, so I hope this was helpful, @98beebee :)
