Double-space = necessary?

Do we have to double-space essays?

I mean like those schools who don't give word limits and say like 'write a page' isn't very clear...

Or how about writing in size 10-font???

Don't bother using size 10 font; it'll give the adcoms a headache. as for whether the essay should be double-spaced or single-spaced, your guess is as good as mine.

Think like your audience. To do that, you must think about how you would act if you were in their place.

Would YOU want to read a 3 page essay crammed into a one page of single-spaced, 10point font?? Probably not. Even if you DID read it, you'd get a headache after 10 seconds of trying to read it, and you'd likely toss it into the trash before you finished... never mind the content or complex ideas discussed within.. that gets lost in the 10point font and single-spaced format.

For ease's sake (and "ease" often gets you the job.. stuff like simply choosing a nice, simple, WHITE resume paper instead of a loud, obnoxious neon pink one), just stick to a simple format that you would hand into a teacher. 12 point font, Times New Roman, double spaced. No funky margins or borders. Clear, concise, and kind of BORING. Let your WORDS stand out, and NOTHING ELSE.

And for God's sake, EDIT your essay down... then you will fit in the one page they give you. :)

Well, Penn's app explicitly states to not exceed one page. 12-point font, double-spaced means like, 2 paragraphs.

i would single-space

I think 1.5 spacing would be the best option. imo double spacing is too much space.

Double-spacing makes your essay look like a rough draft you're handing into your editor.

Single-spacing makes you look like a scumbag who's trying to waste the admissions officer's time by cramming a three-page essay onto one page.

I like 1.5.
