double vs double with bath Gilchrist

my son likes Gilchrist. do they have many double with baths there? is it worth it to try to go for that or just go with a double. I realize there's a cost difference. His number is 35.
also, are freshman just put in rooms with other freshmen or would there be chance of being with an upperclassman if he went with the double with bath vs plain double.

his dorm choice order is Gilchrist, Broward, Cawthorn, Reynolds.

Also, should he pick that his preference would be the room type more than dorm?

with his number would he pretty much assured of getting his room type and his dorm preference no matter which he preference he put?

any advice would be appreciated.

Pretty much. I would suggest double with bath and if none avail he will get double. Most students who return to the dorms as sophomores either will be in singles, or in doubles with their choice of dorm-mate. There are not a lot of freshman randomly in rooms with upperclassman. It can happen, not that likely.

My D enjoyed Gilchrist. A great centrally located dorm.

My D will be a freshman and has a priority #0004. We are requesting single w/bath. Any possibility of her getting a single, or are these reserved for upperclassmen only? If she can’t get that, what is the pecking order of dorms that offer the closest/next best thing?

This past year, there was quite a few more returning sophomores in the dorms than in years past, and it was hard for sophomores to get a single. Is a single possible with a priority number of 4, sure. Likely, not. A single with private bath, not gonna happen. But after dorm assignment, put in for a dorm reassignment. There is alot of movement until move in day. But D knows sophomores who don’t have a single with bath. Those rooms are generally the RA rooms. And a single with bath is VERY ISOLATING.

I don’t know what you mean by dorms that offer the closest next best thing. After a single would be a double.

^I agree with Sunny. A freshman would likely find themselves happiest interacting with others on her floor, even if this is seemingly difficult at the outset. The friendships made early on are frequently lasting.

you know, the more I think about it, it might be better for my son to be in a double sharing a bath with another double…presumably they’d at least meet the other guys sharing the bathroom. and not to be sexest, but 4 guys sharing a bathroom probably is no big deal for them…since the suite dorms are less social already it might further isolate him to be in a double sharing the bath with one person.

any thoughts about that?

I think that is very workable. Both my daughters started in east-side dorms (Gilchrist and Reynolds) and loved it. They both had a lot of fun and made a lot of friends. The east side, near Landis Green, is where the action usually is in terms of newer students.

Thank you for your input. I didn’t think that a single was possible for a freshman (even with a #4 priority), but wanted to know thoughts from people who went thru this. We requested Gilchrist, Broward, Reynolds, Wildwood. I know they are popular requests. I guess I was asking which of these she would be more likely to get a better room assignment. We are not familiar with the dorms there, only what we are reading. If asking for a single w/bath, and not assigned that, then what would she likely be assigned?

There is a possibility.

I am a current freshman with a priority number of 52. I live in Salley right now. I put in a reassignment a long time ago for a single or single with bath, and right after Thanksgiving, I was reassigned to a single with bath in Broward for the spring term. Well, Salley grew on me, and I was able to cancel the reassignment. I was really surprised that I could secure a single with bath as a freshman though. It can happen, apparently.

“I am a current freshman with a priority number of 52”

oh, my goodness. what did you put down for choices for dorm? was Salley one of them?

i jus applied with my friend. our number is like 1920 something. any chance we’ll get into gilchrist or broward? if not we put down deviney and dorman as the other options, any thoughts on that?

My first choice was Landis, which is where I was originally assigned.

Then I decided I really did not want a meal plan and requested a reassignment to Salley. Even though it’s tiny and old, it’s fun because you meet three new people right off the bat, and then you get to know your neighbors. It’s a social dorm.

Deviney and Dorman are old. They are often listed at the bottom of the list for dorms. I am afraid that Deviney, Dorman and Kellem are not the best choices. Wildwood is not as central but new, and popular with upperclassman who come back for a year in the dorms. There will be a few sophomores there. DeGraff is new, but on the other side of Tennessee, but there is a connecting tunnel and it is close to the Union. Smith is old, but the bathrooms have been redone, the furniture is newer. The rooms are small and the beds are built-in. So you can’t rearrange the room. But it is a very social dorm. And there are a lot of fans of Smith. Also consider a living-learning community. Check them out on the FSU website.

Best thing is to go visit on one of the accepted student days in the spring. They will have 4-5 of them, on Fridays. The dorms will ALL be open, and there will be students giving tours. You can get better idea in person. You can also get your FSU card (the lines are very long if you wait until orientation.) You can go to sessions about majors you are interested, and get an idea about the layout of the campus. You can visit the dining halls.

To be honest, it is the friends you make and not the building you are in for your dorm. Just remember that and you will be fine.

You have until March to change the order of your dorm requests.

well would you say that deviney and dorman are the best community style?
