I recently got accepted to Drexel and Penn State. I am going into nursing for both and hopefully both for nrotc. But I'm not sure which school has a better program for NURSING UNDERGRAD- drexel or Penn State University Park. Academically and socially, like housing and location, etc.? For my NROTC nurse corps preferences I put northeastern, drexel then penn state, but I feel like I should go to Penn State, but then again I have no knowledge of what each school will actually provide for me!!! Help please! Sources from actual attendees of the school or graduates! Please!

Hey there!
First, let me just say I think it’s super awesome that you want to participate in an ROTC program. I’m a Drexel undergrad right now, so I can’t speak too much for Penn State. Drexel’s Navy ROTC program actually is run out of the University of Pennsylvania (uPenn), which is Drexel’s neighbor. I know three or four students here who are in the ROTC at uPenn and they’ve all told me they like the program because it lets them participate in the ROTC they want to (Navy) while attending classes at the school they want to (Drexel). My knowledge of ROTC is pretty much limited to that.

In terms of nursing, Drexel’s got an excellent program. Drexel’s hallmark is experential-learning, or “Co-Op”. Drexel believes that students can’t be expected to learn everything they’ll need in a classroom. To maximize a students education, they really need to get their hands dirty. Drexel does this through the Co-Op program, which I’m sure you’ve heard about. If not, google it. Drexel’s website probably explains it better than I can. Nursing is no exception to this though, and Drexel’s nursing program is great in that it offers students more chances to not only learn in actual hospitals and through actual relevant work experience, but also to test the waters of the career and see if it’s right for them.

If you have any more specific questions feel free and I’ll try my best!

Thank you so much!! It does make sense bc co-op is a paid program while penn state mandates one year at Hershey Medical Hospital senior year, but no pay. Also Drexel works with UPENN, who doesn’t love smarties!! Haha, did you grow up in Philly, around Drexel?

I grew up in Central Jersey, a bit ways north of Princeton. My town is mostly farms, woods, and small developments, so it was a big chance for me to move to an Urban environment. I really like it so far though. It takes a little bit of getting used to (Walking anyplace in my town is simply unheard of), but I’ve really come to enjoy it. University City (the part of Philly where Drexel is) is composed of only colleges, which definitely gives a nice atmosphere to the area. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t feel unsafe on/around campus either, and as long as you have your wits and street-smarts about you, you’re fine.
