Drinking Age 18

Because the drinking age is 18 is there alot more partying and drinking at McGill. Also are students allowed to keep alcohol in their dorms or is drinking not allowed at dorms. Whats the social life like at McGill. Are there alot of drinkers, smokers, how are the girls?. Do students get any dicounts at ski mountains nearby montreal?

I'd say the partying is pretty frequent..when I visited my friends at McGill in March the folks at Gardner ventured down to a bar for arts and crafts night and the rest stayed behind and played beer pong in the washroom. This was on a Monday night. It didn't seem like it was impossible to study though, there were lots of people in their rooms doing work as well. And although there is partying and drinking since the drinking age is 18, from what I've seen/heard it's all pretty responsible. At the upper residences I don't think they care about possession of alcohol..there were people drinking in the halls and this one guy was brewing beer in his room.

right, so let's just say that almost everyone from my school (in NH) makes several Montreal trips their senior year to get completely wrecked. That aside, from what I have heard, McGill "supplies" alcohol during frosh week, although I might be wrong about this one. McGill was awarded some sort of party school celebrity via Playboy magazine for a recent rowdy party. As for the skiing, I was looking up McGill's outing club and there is a "lodge" you can stay at for a couple bucks a night in the Eastern Townships if you want to ski, hike, whatnot. Not too sure on actual tickets, but there might be some kind of loophole. And, apparently, most people get baked. It's pretty tolerated, from what I've seen, in Montreal.

Which faculty were you admitted to?

Ah, I take that back. Good luck next year

i am a jr who wants to go to mcgill and i was just wondering about the social life there. It seems good especially since i like drinking alot, and not only just to get drunk, but at dinner and such

when i visited last year, the waiter at the bistro offered me wine. Not very strict up there.

SSMU has a contract with Boreale which is a great local beer. They also own Gert's pub in the Shatner building (i.e. there's a bar on campus, if this feels alien to Americans). A lot of people drink themselves silly during the first two weeks. After that, there is plenty of drinking in a way as it's legal but it's usually moderate. You don't see the kind of bad stuff related to drinking that occurs on some American campuses.

are there really no on-campus bars at US schools? weird...the school i'm probably going to next year has i think 3 on-campus pubs-they're actually run by student government and can be great sources of income for them.

Restaurants that aren't BYOW make their profit on the alcohol they sell. As it is culturally accepted to have a glass of wine with a meal, it's not surprising they made the offer. No one is worried about moderate drinking.
