I'm approaching the early action deadline for most of my colleges. Right now the highest schools i'm looking at are Cornell and SUNY Geneseo. The rest are NY state schools and a few private colleges like Union.

Now, i'm in a rush as is to get my forms in but the one thing I am unsure of is whether to keep Spanish 12 or not.

I'm taking double AP sciences this year and could definitely utilize the free period in my schedule. Especially now with all this college work. I've taken Spanish since the 7th grade and our high school Spanish program is completed by junior year so this year it is optional.

My question is, whether I should drop it or not. To be honest i've always dreaded Spanish and it's never been my best class. Would the colleges make a big deal out of me not taking a fourth year of Spanish? If I did drop it I would try to get into an honors economics class.

If you drop it mid-year, does a "W" appear on your transcript? That's what happens at our high school. If you decide to drop Spanish, I advise you immediately set up a CLEP test at any local university. You should be able to get credit for the Spanish you've taken. Most colleges accept CLEP credits. My son paid the local U $80 to administer the test and he received 6 credits. He took the AP test and did not do well enough to receive any credit.

I would think you'd be fine with 4 years of Spanish, which is what you already have. Every college whose requirements I've looked at counts middle school as the first year of language if you come into high school at level 2. If you don't particularly care for Spanish (and particularly if it's not a course of study you'll be continuing), I'd take the free period and make sure I devoted the necessary time to the subjects in which I was interested. It's important to have a good grounding in the subjects you'll continue to study in college. I agree though that you need to figure out how it will be reflected on your transcript if you drop.

Yeah, I really have no idea where to ask about this. I'm not sure about language levels in my high school but those who continue with a language as an elective only need to take it up to 11th grade.

I just wish there was a way to hide or explain my "dropped while passing" mark on the report card. I mean would it reflect that badly? I honestly think dropping would be smarter but the colleges wouldn't know that.

Update, just talked to my counselor and apparently middle school Spanish doesn't count in my school. =(

I really cannot stand this class for very much longer. She said that if I did drop I could possible get a Spanish grade on my first quarter report card. However after that it will say WP for dropped while passing.

I visited SUNY Geneseo which is probably one of my top choices for schools and they liked to see students challenge themselves. They also have a number of 4 year Spanish students. I can understand if I took AP level SUNY Spanish. However Spanish 12 is giving me nothing. I don't want them to think I am lazy and simply dropping courses but this class is really cutting in on time for my two AP courses and I was never great at Spanish. I got an 89 this first quarter for Spanish 12. I want to have the four years and appeal to Geneseo more however this is the one class I would do better without.
