I decided to take on online AP Physics B course because my school didn't offer it my senior year. I was supposed to have a mentor who would help me with the course material. When the course began, the teacher who was supposed to mentor me wasn't able to. I also had trouble doing labs designed for multiple people by myself. The class began to take up tons of my time so I dropped it at semester. The person in charge of the program offered to write a letter explaining the problems and why I dropped. It also explains why I got a B (labs). I've read it and it's pretty good. I don't want to have been dishonest about my senior schedule on my app. Should I either:

A. Not report the schedule change unless the college specifically asks for it

B. Report the change and send in the letter (explaining my B and why I dropped)

Any input?

Yes, your senior schedule is being used to evaluate you so if you drop a class, especially a core class like that then you should drop them a note. I don’t think explaining the grade is worth anything.

I would just notify the colleges via email that you dropped the class because the teacher who had offered to mentor was unable to do so. I wouldn’t do anything else. Unless you have some good news (awards, accomplishments) you could put in the same email.

The explanation of the grade isn’t really why i’m sending it. I thought it would look more legitimate if it was written by the person in charge of the program. I’m worried it will make me look lazy and hurt my chances at top colleges if they think I just dropped it.

I forgot to mention that the class was taken through my school. The person who wrote the letter knows me well and goes into detail about how I’m still taking the most rigorous load available with the drop. I have no problem informing them of it, just am curios if I should add the letter.

I think the letter from the teacher sounds great. You DO have to report senior schedule changes, and this seems like an ideal way to do so.

I think that you need to report your schedule change. As you said, top colleges will wonder why you dropped a rigorous course and that will not reflect well. You should just explain the circumstances you were under and how your mentor was no longer going to be available to guide you.
