I'm a senior and my school has a schedule where we take four full-year courses each semester, so new courses are just starting right now. The drop deadline is tomorrow. I have a really heavy schedule (three AP classes and college third-year calculus) that is turning out to be somewhat unmanageable. I've put down those courses on all my apps. I'm applying to the higher UCs, as well as Ivies (probably reach schools) and other comparable schools. If I drop one of my AP classes (to free period), would it drastically affect my chances?

Switching to a free period, after replacing it with an Ap can affect your admission. Even if you didn't drop the Ap and just had a free period, admissions may be affected.

Yes, but how much? My schedule will still have three hard classes though. And the class I want to drop is AP Environmental Science, which I think most don't consider to be the hardest class (It is a lot of tedious work in my case though). I'm vacillating since I kind of want to sleep. Will it kill my chances?

i seriously doubt it will make anyone reject you, they won't even know you dropped a class until after you're accepted so it makes no difference.

They can claim you applied under a false pretense if you drop the class, especially if it's on your app. I'd call admissions and ask, most will say no. I know for ED you are not allowed to drop a class usually, even an elective for such reasons.

My son was accepted ED to Columbia. He took seven AP courses (plus Leadership) first semester, but decided a couple of weeks ago that he wanted to drop one of his AP classes for second semester. He emailed his admissions counselor, who gave him permission to drop the class. I generally believe it's better to seek permission than forgiveness, although the question gets muddied in the RD process. If you ask permission, what are they going to say? I suspect they'll say that the call is yours, which is not very helpful. Perhaps you could have your counselor call for you?
