Dropping a class...

So I want to drop my AP Enviro Sci class after this marking period, which ends on Friday. I can't stand the class. It's mind numbingly boring and the topics don't interest me at all. Right now I have an A and it will be an A on this first report card but I'm afraid I won't do well if I stay in the class. The class is a lot of work that I don't need right now with college applications and my two other AP classes, which actually interest me. Will it hurt my admission chances if I drop it? My junior year schedule was high in rigor so it wouldn't hurt too much if I only take 2 APs senior year and an honors, right?

You should be careful about doing that. After I got accepted to the school I wanted to go to, I asked specifically if I could drop a class for a specific reason (would get out of school earlier, can work extra 5 hours a week) and they said yes. Other students I know who tried to do that, their schools said no. Now, of you drop the class, send schools a transcript without the class on there, they won’t know it ever existed. But if you sent transcripts with the class already on there, I would wait until you hear back from the schools, because informing a school you’re dropping an AP class while they’re making your admission decision isn’t nessrcarily the best plan in my opinion.

The class will be on my transcript but I think only 0.5 of the 1.5 credit. I’m applying regular decision to some selective schools and I was just worried about having a dropped class on my transcript. I’m not dropping it because it’s difficult, I just don’t like the class. I figured if I get an A for the dropped class on my transcript then my intentions on dropping the class would be clear.

I agree with Etuck24. I think if the class you are dropping is an elective class and not one of your core academic classes, you might be OK. You don’t say what type of colleges you are applying to – but this is a science class, and most highly selective schools want to see four years of science, history, english, math and many want 3-4 years of foreign language. So… if you drop AP Env Sci, do you have another science class.

Also, what was the rigor of your junior year. At many, many info sessions, we heard the same thing repeated over and over – the adm officers want to see that your senior year is as difficult or more difficult than your junior year. So by dropping it you will have 2 APs and one honor class. Is that what you had your junior year? If you had more than that, you could be in trouble.
