Hello i21GHTEOUS. I am the athletics liaison from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Columbia. I'll be sure to relay your concerns to your coach. Won't be too hard for me to figure out which coach is out of the country right now. I think it's fencing, no? I'll be on it first thing Monday morning. Just a quick bit of advice: I'd highly advise against using the word "fag" when you arrive on campus. It won't elicit great feedback. In any case, I'd also highly advise against dropping the course. You were admitted with the program you had in place upon admission. If you decide to change your program (and not clear it first with the Admission Office) you risk losing your admission. ROAR!

Ok thank you very much admission guy. yes it is fencing, very impressive lol
yes and im sorry for using that word, ill make sure it doesn't happen again.

wait, do you actually believe him? is there any way to fully check "AdmissionGuy"'s actual identity? even if there's no way of knowing, he didn't your name, this is his first post, and he made a comment (in somewhat of a forced way) on columbia's political correctness, somehow expecting to add credibility. i mean if he really is an "athletics liaison from the admissions office" or whatever he claims to be, then my bad, it was for sure an honest mistake. but he left no contact info (like an e-mail address for the fencing coach). any mildly informed CC thread reader would be able to fully contrive that post.

awww why did you go and tell him???? i'm not the poster but it would have been funny to let this guy believe that it actually WAS an admissions guy :P

wow im sooo confused but im jus gonna believe that he is really what he says he is. n e ways no i dont have a pass fail option in my school.
n e ways
have a good one everybody

hey guys- i'm a junior at columbia now. i saw this thread and thought i'd reply to some of the questions that came up here.

first, i'm not an admissions officer, but i'm pretty sure that when the admissions office "strongly recommends" doing or not doing something, it's best to take that advice. in my (subjective!) opinion, it's probably not worth the risk to drop calculus, especially since any calc background will be really, really helpful here if you ever have to take an econ, math, or science course. if you're really concerned about it, i'd recommend contacting the admissions office and talking to someone there directly.

second, everyone at columbia from actors to athletes is a student first. you should know that i came from a high school with a very intense crew program, and many of my best friends were applying to schools through crew. as a result, i got to columbia with a huge chip on my shoulder about athletes. but after about 5 minutes on this campus, you start to realize that you can't judge anyone based on their extracurriculars or their background or even (i know this sounds cheesy) the way they look. people here are serious about their studies; you can't get into this school or come out the other side if you aren't. i think that's one of the coolest things about columbia--you can sit around on your floor with the football player and the jazz musician and the student council representative and the president of a culture club and talk about the iliad and foucault. you can sit next to the pre-med art history major and civil engineer at the opera for your music hum class, and talk about the musical themes during intermission. and the truth is, when it comes time for midterms and finals, you will run into everyone you've ever met on this campus at the library.

finally, this is one of the most diverse schools in one of the most diverse cities in the country. regardless of where you come from, you will meet people who come from all walks of social, cultural, political, and religious life. columbia is a community that demands respect among students, and students will let it be known if they feel that respect is compromised. namecalling in general does not go over very well, regardless of the circumstances.

so, i'm sorry for the very long post. congratulations to all of you on getting in-i hope you've been celebrating!

The Admission Guy is for real. Would a fake know that our fencing coach is the world famous George Kolombatovich? College Confidential viewers are clueless if they don't think admission officers are not on this absurd website every day to see what absurdly incorrect information is endlessly circulated on the internet. And most admission officers prefer that our admitted students don't use the word "fag" in the year 2006. ROAR!
