Dropping a class under financial aid?

So, I am failing what is equivalent to English 1C at most colleges. I have recieved 2 of 2 Pell Grant disbursements. I am currently taking 14 units at my community college. If I do drop, it will bring me down to 11 units (3 unit English class). My approximated semester length is about 80 days, and I am about 40 days into the semester. Price is $42 per unit. This will be my first ever class I am dropping on aid. Current Cumulative GPA is a 3.094.

My questions are:
1. If I have to pay back the aid, how much of it will I have to pay?
2. How will this affect my future financial aid?
3. Is it better to get an F and retake or drop?
4. If I do retake, do I still have to pay back the money for the class?

Thanks for anyone who takes the time to answer this. Information is well appreciated.

The only way to know for sure is to call your school’s financial aid office.
When my daughter dropped a class a year or so back, as I was falling asleep that night I jolted awake in a panic — “Holy crap! Will this affect her financial aid???” After a restless night I called the FA office the next day. A giant “WHEW!” when they told me that she was still carrying enough credits that her FA would be unchanged.

Schools vary in terms of how many credits or courses is considered a full load or half-time, etc. Also, I’m not sure, but different types of aid may vary in terms of whether you need to be half-time or more, 3/4 time, etc.

The only way to get an accurate answer is to ask your own school’s FA office. Ask them to take a look at all the components of your aid package and let you know if any of them will be affected.

Dropping this class will bring you below 12 credits, which “could” trigger a loss of 25% of your semester Pell grant. I say “could” because whether or not it will depends on your school’s policies regarding financial aid lock date, tuition refunds, etc. Ask your financial aid office what will happen to YOUR aid if you drop this class now.
