Dropping An Advanced Art Class Senior Year 2nd Semester

Hi, so I'm taking all APs this year except for Art, for which I'm at the second highest level at my school. I took Art thinking that it would be a fun class senior year since I hadn't yet taken any visual arts classes at my high school.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be anything BUT fun. I still love Art but I cannot STAND my art teacher - he has mood swings, especially after staff meetings, where he takes out his anger on students, yells, cusses, and bangs things then goes into his office and comes out like nothing happened. He's extremely unprofessional but tenured so it's not like he can be fired all that easily either.

Given all this, I'd like to drop the class second semester. However I got a B in Art first semester (I know - it's bad. Got all As otherwise) and I would only have 4 classes if I dropped, albeit the hardest ones offered at my school.

What are your guys' honest opinions of how/if dropping Art would affect my admissions decisions? Could it possibly be a deal-breaker for a top 10/top 20 school even though I only took it for fun? I pretty much only applied regular decision and haven't heard back from any schools yet.

FYI: I'm looking at Ivy-level schools, and I didn't submit any art supplements or apply for any Fine Arts programs/majors.

Help much appreciated!

A first-semester B in art is probably not going to affect your admissions decisions, in my opinion. However, I get your fear…I feel the same about Macroeconomics. Scared for my GPA. Good luck.

Thanks bodangles I appreciate it, but my grade isn’t really what I’m worried about right now; my concern is more about having to suffer through another semester with a teacher I find highly unreasonable. I’ll suck it up if I have to but if it doesn’t have a negative impact on colleges I’d rather not.

Dropping art will not have any effect on anything in terms of college admissions.

Well it would at UC’s which require a continuous year of art or you wouldn’t meet basic a - g requirements… Check with your GC, and check if you will need to notify your colleges.

I’d check with your guidance counselor. I don’t think that getting a B in AP art would be a problem. And you do have to notify colleges if you drop a course. It will probably be OK to drop an art class, but definitely don’t do it without checking first.
